SIU’s wildlife research lab celebrates 75 years, anticipates the future

For 75 years, SIU Carbondale’s wildlife research program — founded in 1950 as the Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory and now known as the Center for Wildlife Sustainability Research (CWSR) — has stood at the forefront of science, conservation and education. This fall, SIU will mark the milestone and transition to the CWSR with a free, two-day celebration, Sept. 26-27, at the Helleny Pavilion in the Banterra Center. The registration deadline is Sept.17.


SIU journalism student sharpens career focus with elite German fellowship

Carly Gist, a third-year undergraduate student in journalism, recently spent three weeks of concentrated study in Germany as one of 11 American students who participated in a fellowship that connects American journalism students with their German peers.


Celebrate SIU Day at the Du Quoin State Fair on Saturday 

Be sure and wear maroon during SIU Day/Coal Heritage Day on Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Du Quoin State Fair. Several departments and units on campus will have myriad activities from noon to 3 p.m. in the air conditioned Second Heat building, located on Midway Drive across from the walk-in plaza and an adjacent outdoor area. Parking is free for all SIU students, faculty and staff with valid ID. In addition, stop by Saluki Central — the roundhouse in front of the main grandstand — during the fair through Labor Day.


SIU nursing students make big impact sharing knowhow with community

Nursing students led by Debra Penrod, assistant professor of nursing, participate in numerous service-learning projects, including a brain health fair cosponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association and SIU’s Recreational Sports and Services.


Saluki football season opens on Saturday  

The 2025 Saluki football season opens at home against Division II Thomas More at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30. Faculty and staff can buy discounted tickets for $10 apiece using the code SIUVIP or on gameday by showing your SIU Carbondale ID. Chancellor Austin Lane invites you to also stop by his tailgate tent in front of Saluki Row (practice field) south of the stadium near the bronze Saluki statue between 3 p.m. and kickoff. Simon Institute to host virtual talk with philanthropy expert Sept. 3

David Callahan, founder and editor of Inside Philanthropy, will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute for a virtual conversation at noon, Wednesday, Sept. 3, to discuss the challenges and opportunities confronting philanthropy during this turbulent time in the United States. The discussion via Zoom is free and open to the public, but registration to view the conversation is required.


Learn about emergency preparedness and responding to an active threat

As the fall semester gets underway, now is a good time to learn about emergency preparedness on campus. During an active threat, members of the campus community might receive text messages to “Run. Hide. Fight.”


Alumnus donates world percussion collection 

Accomplished percussionist and 1971 SIU School of Music alumnus Ken Park recently donated $100,000 worth of percussion instruments and accessories to the School of Music, giving students hands-on access to global sounds and professional grade gear. 


No SIU Today on Monday 

There will be no SIU Today on Monday, Sept. 1, due to the Labor Day holiday. SIU Today will resume on Thursday, Sept. 4. Submission deadlines will remain the same: two business days before the desired publication date. The deadline for the Sept. 4 edition will be Sept. 2.
