Learn about emergency preparedness at SIU
As the fall semester gets underway, now is a good time to learn about emergency preparedness on campus. Visit the emergency preparedness website, emergency.siu.edu.
During an active threat, members of the campus community might receive text messages to “Run. Hide. Fight.” Visit the Department of Public Safety’s website to learn more and watch a video that illustrates an active threat scenario (some scenes might be disturbing).
Review the campus policy, visit Saluki Net and search for “update your contact information "to ensure that the university has your cellphone number if you want to receive emergency text alerts. Your SIU email address is already automatically entered into the university’s Rave Mobile Safety alert system.
The university is also employing the LiveSafe app to facilitate two-way communication between the Department of Public Safety and faculty, staff, students and the larger community. The app is available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
For urgent communications that require immediate action to protect health and safety, SIU will still use Rave to send text messages and emails. LiveSafe is an additional means of communication. Through the app, users can contact police about emergencies and non-emergencies, report suspicious activities, learn about ways to stay safe and request a Safe Walk escort between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. LiveSafe will also be used to provide information during campus emergencies after the immediate threat to safety has passed.
