SIU Simmons Law School gives students a preview of legal careers

Fourteen high achieving college students gained insight on legal careers and preparing for law school earlier this month through SIU Simmons Law School’s Pipeline to Practice program.


Volunteers invited to help Salukis move in to SIU residence halls

University Housing is inviting volunteers from the campus and community to help Salukis move in to their new homes away from home. Individuals and groups are encouraged to sign up by Friday, Aug. 1, to be part of the move-in brigade.


Demolition Day for old Greek Row, Campus Lake Fountain dedication are Aug. 6

The public is invited to two events on campus on Wednesday, Aug. 6. At 4 p.m., the start of the demolition of six former residence halls along old Greek Row will begin to clear the way for a proposed new student housing development. From 6 to 7 p.m., the Campus Lake Fountain dedication takes place at Becker Pavilion. The fountain is a tribute to the late Tilden “Tim” Parks, a 1976 SIU alumnus.


SIU Dental Hygiene Clinic gives adults a smile

With the assistance of fourth-year dental hygiene students, faculty, local hygienists and dentists, the SIU Dental Hygiene Clinic hosted its annual Give Adults a Smile Day on July 18.


SIU team finalist and wins top prize for social media in national algae competition 

A student team led by Scott D. Hamilton-Brehm, associate professor in the School of Biological Sciences, recently took the top prize for social media coverage of its efforts at the 2023-25 U.S. Department of Energy’s AlgaePrize competition.

SIU Carbondale students will have myriad activities and events, including Saluki Startup and Weeks of Welcome, to begin the fall 2025 semester.


SIU Foundation raises $39M in second-best year ever 

SIU Carbondale supporters donated $39 million in fiscal year 2025 — the second-highest fundraising total in SIU Foundation history — in support of scholarships, research and capital projects across campus. The foundation awarded a record-breaking $5.6 million in scholarships to more than 2,000 students, representing over 17% of the student body. 


SIU Alumni Association awards over $79,000 to support students

The SIU Alumni Association will award a total of $79,140 in student support for the 2025-26 academic year, including $45,500 in scholarships and $33,640 in textbook awards to deserving students attending SIU Carbondale.


SIU welcomes nominations for Women of Action Awards

Online nominations are being accepted by Aug. 14 for the fourth annual Women of Action Awards, which honor “everyday heroes” who make a difference in the lives of others. Organized by the Women’s Resource Center, all female faculty and staff members, students and community members are eligible. The awards presentation will be Aug. 26.


SIU President Mahony: Why changes in college athletics matter

SIU System President Dan Mahony’s “Office Hours” latest podcast is “College Athletics Is Changing and Why It Matters.” Mahony, a longtime sport management professor, discusses the issue with athletic directors Tim Leonard (SIU Carbondale), Andrew Gavin (SIU Edwardsville), and Ken Halpin, deputy athletic director and chief operating officer (Purdue University).


SIU Credit Union Trailhead opens at Touch of Nature 

Chancellor Austin Lane, Brian Croft, Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center director, and SIU Credit Union officials celebrated the July 24 opening of the SIU Credit Union Trailhead. The trailhead pavilion was made possible by a $500,000 donation from the credit union. 


Sign up now for SIU’s Saluki Open Pickleball Tournament

Registration is underway for the fifth annual Saluki Open Pickleball Tournament, Sept. 13-14. The deadline for the reduced registration fee is 9 p.m. today (July 31). The registration deadline is Sept. 7.


Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter is available

The latest Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for July 2025 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.


Reminder: Public input welcome on DPS accreditation 

The Department of Public Safety is seeking public comment as part of an accreditation process with the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. The university community, DPS employees and the general public are invited to offer comments by email to jmurphy@iaclea.org or phone at 618-453-8654 between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 11.

Academic units, departments, student organizations and individuals are reminded the deadline to showcase the great programs and services that SIU Carbondale provides to our region and beyond as a part of SIU Day at the Du Quoin State Fair is Aug. 22. SIU Day at the fair is Aug. 30.
