SIU Carbondale officially among top research schools in the U.S.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale today (Feb. 13) has officially entered the ranks of the top research universities in the nation: It has been designated Research 1, or R1, by the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education.
High school students coming to SIU for regional science competition
About two dozen young scientists from throughout the state will be on campus Feb. 21-22 for a two-day symposium highlighting their independent research. The Illinois Junior Science & Humanities Symposium is hosted by the STEM Education Research Center.
SIU’s SouthernTECH is March 4
The SouthernTECH 2025: Advancing SIU Research, Building Businesses, Igniting Smart Growth conference is March 4 at the Gower Translational Research Center (formerly McLafferty Annex). Online registration is available.
Wendell and Gloria Williams establish scholarship
Wendell Williams, vice chancellor for enrollment management, and his wife, Gloria, have established the Wendell and Gloria Williams Family Scholarship to lend support to Black SIU students as they pursue their education goals.
Campus community invited to listening sessions on travel expense vouchers
Susan Simmers, vice chancellor for administration and finance, is inviting the campus community to join her for listening sessions next month for employees to provide feedback and insights into travel expense vouchers.
Faculty, staff eligible for youth summer soccer camp discounts
SIU women’s soccer is offering discounts for upcoming camps for children of SIU Carbondale faculty and staff. The two available youth camps for all genders ages 6-14 are June 9-12 and July 14-17.

SIU Carbondale’s popular, Valentine-themed climbing competition, Love at First Onsight, returns to campus Saturday, Feb. 15, and registration is underway.
Busy week ahead for Saluki sports
Saluki athletics have a packed week ahead to give fans many chances to show their maroon passion. The SIU women’s basketball team plays two games at Banterra Center — Missouri State at 6 p.m. today (Feb. 13) and the University of Illinois Chicago at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16. The Saluki men’s and women’s track teams host the Don DeNoon Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the SIU Recreation Center. Later that night, the SIU men’s basketball team hosts Belmont University at 6 p.m. at Banterra Center in a game that will celebrate the decades of the 1980s and 1990s. Reminder: SIU Student Distinguished Service Award
Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate a deserving student for a 2025 Student Distinguished Service Award by the SIU Board of Trustees. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. March 3.
