SIU Carbondale has nearly $2.7B impact on Illinois, supports 18.6K jobs

A report conducted by a research team led by SIU Carbondale professors Jebaraj Asirvatham and Scott Gilbert reveals SIU Carbondale has a statewide impact of almost $2.7 billion from the university’s operations, student expenditures, visitor spending and alumni incomes. And its economic activity supports 18,601 jobs.


Reminder: Faculty-staff appreciation coffee is Tuesday 

A faculty-staff appreciation coffee hosted by Chancellor Austin Lane is from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, in the Student Center’s International Lounge prior to the university recognizing employees for their service and commitment and honoring retiring employees during a ceremony and reception at 10 a.m. in the Student Center Ballrooms.

SIU to host Holiday Arts and Crafts Sale Dec. 5-7

The 46th annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Sale in the Student Center’s first floor Art Gallery and Renaissance Room is Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 5-7.


Events needed for Winter Weeks of Welcome schedule 

New Student Programs will host Winter Weeks of Welcome, Jan. 13-31, to help kick off SIU Carbondale’s spring 2025 semester, and the office is seeking events, activities and opportunities to add to the schedule. The submission deadline is Dec. 15.


Paul Simon Institute to examine parents’ role in civic education, promoting citizenship

Political science professor and author Lindsey Cormack will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, for a virtual discussion on parents’ roles in teaching civic education to their children. The discussion is free and open to the public, but registration to view the conversation is required.


‘Journey to the Sun’ talk at SIU to focus on space weather

Space weather, and its connections to the Earth and sun, is the topic of the next “Journey to the Sun” talk at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in Morris Library’s Guyon Auditorium. Peggy Hill, Solar System Ambassador for NASA and a professor emerita of physics at Southeast Missouri State University, will present “Space Weather: The Sun-Earth Connection.”


Reminder: Dec. 14 commencement volunteers needed 

Volunteer opportunities remain available for faculty, staff and members of the community who would like to assist graduating Salukis as they celebrate their accomplishments during commencement exercises at Banterra Center on Dec. 14.


Reminder: Mandatory annual Title IX training is underway   

SIU Carbondale employees are reminded to complete mandatory training on new Title IX regulations before Dec. 13. Employees should have received an email on Oct. 15 from Vector Solutions with training information for “Preventing Harassment and Discrimination Supervisors + Clery Act and Title IX.” The link to the training is also available on the Office of Equity and Compliance website
