SIU to host international conference on potential extraterrestrial communication
Work continues on finding ways to communicate with nonhuman intelligence, and an international conference on Saturday, Nov. 9, in Sharp Museum will delve deeper into language and the increased possibilities of breaking those barriers.
SIU farms coral to help imperiled ecosystems survive, explore aquaculture
Much of the Earth’s freshwater eventually joins with massive, salty oceans where it can deeply impact life in those marine systems. Amid farm fields hundreds of miles away, scientists at SIU’s Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences are growing coral, a beautiful and sensitive lifeform sitting in the nexus of these systems and their interactions.
Compensation 2030 open forums on Nov. 14 and Nov. 18
Earlier this year, SIU Carbondale launched Compensation 2030, a study of faculty and staff compensation. Human Resources invites faculty and staff to attend one of four open forums to learn about the faculty compensation study results and hear updates on the staff job analysis process, study, timelines and next steps.
Title IX training to be offered in person on Nov. 13
SIU Carbondale employees have an additional option to complete mandatory Title IX training. The Office of Equity and Compliance will conduct in-person training from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium.
SIU celebrating first-generation students Nov. 6-8
About two of every five SIU Carbondale students are first generation, meaning they are the first in their immediate family to earn a bachelor’s degree, and SIU will celebrate them Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 6-8, with a variety of special activities.
SIU to hold annual Veterans Day vigil
SIU Carbondale will publicly commemorate Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11, with the annual vigil at the flagpole on the corner of South Normal Avenue and West Grand Avenue, near the center of the SIU campus.
Encourage fall semester graduates to complete survey
Faculty and staff are being asked by the Career Development Center to remind students of a survey for undergraduate and graduate students who are planning to graduate in December.
Reminder: Brand training
Faculty and staff are invited to attend a brand training session offered by University Communications and Marketing to learn more about the new, compelling brand messaging platform about what makes the Saluki experience special. You can attend a session on Tuesday or Wednesday, Nov. 5 or 6, from 12:30-2 p.m. in Morris Library’s Guyon Auditorium.
SIU will “game” to raise funds to help furry friends
SIU Carbondale faculty, staff and students will participate in a 16-hour livestream of games Thursday and Friday, Nov. 7-8, to raise funds for the St. Francis CARE (Community Animal Rescue and Education) animal shelter.
Not unlucky: SIU Flying Salukis hit 13 straight regional titles
Winning each of the nine events they competed in, the Flying Salukis used a dominating performance recently to easily win their 13th straight National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) Region VIII championship. The team will now compete for a 10th national title in May.
Paul Simon Public Policy Institute hosts Metro East Youth Leadership Weekend
The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute hosted young Black males from the Metro East at the 19th Metro East Youth Leadership Weekend, Nov. 2-3. Between 40 and 45 students in eighth through 12th grade engaged in activities designed to promote career awareness, servant leadership and political involvement.
SIU Health Law Moot Court examines state products liability statute, federal False Claims Act
Twenty-three teams from around the country competed Nov. 1-2 as the Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School hosted the 33rd National Health Law Moot Court — the only mock U.S. Supreme Court competition dedicated to the always evolving and expanding topic of health law. A team from Loyola University Chicago School of Law won the event.
Recent Conversations of Understanding are available
Two recent Conversations of Understanding on the power of civil discourse and the legacy of the Civil Rights Act and Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 are available for viewing. The sessions are hosted by the SIU System’s Office of Antiracism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
SIU Today Veterans Day observance
There will be no SIU Today on Monday, Nov. 11, as the university is closed in honor and observance of Veterans Day. Submission deadlines remain the same: two business days before publication. That means submission deadlines are Tuesday, Nov. 5, for the Nov. 7 edition, and Tuesday, Nov. 12, for the Nov. 14 edition.
