SIU researchers investigate technology to kill supergerms at the nano level

Punit Kohli, professor in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Sciences, along with researchers from the departments of chemistry, microbiology, physiology and the SIU School of Medicine, is studying how to zap antibiotic-resistant bugs using electricity on the nano scale, which could lead to fewer infection-related deaths in hospitals.


Remembering Thelma Mothershed Wair

As we reflect on the life and achievements of Thelma Mothershed Wair, we are proud to call her a member of the Saluki family. Mothershed Wair, who died Oct. 19, earned a bachelor's degree from SIU Carbondale in 1964. Perhaps best known as a member of the Little Rock Nine, she was a true champion of civil rights and diversity, equity and inclusion throughout her entire life.


Pride flag commemorates LGBTQ+ History Month 

A flagpole outside the Student Services Building has a new addition, which will be on display throughout October, which is LGBTQ+ History Month.


Conversation of Understanding on civil rights is Oct. 30 

A Conversation of Understanding on Wednesday, Oct. 30, will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act and Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and look to the future. “Delivering on Promises: The Legacy of the Civil Rights Act and Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, and the 2024 Presidential Election” will be a hybrid event — available both as a live virtual discussion and in person at SIU Edwardsville.


Renewing Illinois Summit to focus on ‘tsunami of change’ in higher education

About 75 students from 10 universities and colleges are attending the two-day Renewing Illinois Summit starting today (Oct. 24) that will look at higher education in the state. Hosted by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, the event includes former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar, Illinois State Rep. Carol Ammons (D-Urbana), SIU System President Dan Mahony and former Illinois state historian Sam Wheeler.


Sessions set to assist in online teaching practices, strategies 

Extended Campus has scheduled three upcoming hourlong interactive sessions to assist SIU Carbondale online faculty and instructors, starting on Tuesday, Oct. 29. 


Author Jeff Biggers to perform ‘Disturbing the Bones’ show at Morris Library on Oct. 30 

American Book Award-winning historian, journalist and playwright Jeff Biggers will discuss and perform excerpts from his new book, “Disturbing the Bones,” during a free, public presentation on Wednesday, Oct. 30, in Morris Library.


Saluki athletics has busy week ahead

There are several ways to show your Saluki support over the next week. The Saluki women’s soccer team hosts Drake at 6 p.m. today (Oct. 24) in the team’s final home match of the regular season at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex. The women’s volleyball team hosts Belmont University at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, and Murray State at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, both at Davies Gym. The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams host the University of Illinois Chicago at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shea Natatorium in the Student Recreation Center. The Saluki baseball team hosts Memphis at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, and the Saluki men’s basketball team opens its 2024-25 season with a free scrimmage against Division III North Park at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Banterra Center. Reminder: Mandatory annual Ethics Act training is due Oct. 31 

Mandatory 2024 annual Ethics Act training for all SIU Carbondale faculty, staff, graduate assistants, undergraduate assistants, volunteers, student workers and extra help workers is due Thursday, Oct. 31, on the D2L platform. School of Medicine employees located on the Carbondale campus will complete training using HealthStream.


Workshop on helping students in need transition to college is Monday 

Student Health Services’ Higher Education Resources and Opportunities for Salukis in Need (HEROES) is hosting a free program for SIU Carbondale faculty and staff on Monday, Oct. 28. “Bridging Healthy Transitions to College” is from 9-11:30 a.m. in the Student Center’s Old Main Room. The program is also open to local school and community counselors and will provide information on how to support students experiencing homelessness and students in care as they transition to SIU. Register here to attend.
