LGBTQ Resource Center renamed to honor founder Paulette Curkin
SIU Carbondale renamed its LGTBQ Resource Center as the Paulette Curkin Pride Resource Center on Oct. 8 in honor of the SIU professional who helped found the center in 2007 and served as its inaugural coordinator.
‘Shutting Down the Strip’ to celebrate Homecoming
In partnership with the SIU Alumni Association, Carbondale Main Street and River Radio, the City of Carbondale is “Shutting Down the Strip” for the Homecoming “Off the Rails” concert, featuring the Jungle Dogs and Modern-Day Saints, from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11. The fun kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with the Saluki Spirit Squad and remarks from the event coordinators and Brian Croft from Touch of Nature. Get details about “Shutting Down the Strip.”
Information Technology to host technology conference on Oct. 18
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is hosting a free half-day conference, “Elevate Your Workday with Technology,” for administrative and managerial professionals from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 18, in Morris Library Room 752/754.
Virtual Illinois Online Higher Education Symposium is Nov. 8
SIU Carbondale faculty, staff and graduate students are invited to participate in a free, virtual event on Nov. 8, which will bring together educators, administrators, instructional designers and instructional technologists involved in online learning in Illinois and beyond.
‘Quick Connect’ virtual office hours for online instructors starts Monday
Extended Campus Executive Director Susan Wegmann is inviting all faculty, especially those who are teaching online courses, to attend virtual office hours each Monday and Thursday, from 12:30-1 p.m.
Volunteers needed for Salukis Care Day
Volunteers are needed for Salukis Care Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Faner Plaza. The volunteer blocks are two hours that include staffing inflatables, monster tricycles, giveaways, crafts and food booths. SIU hosts leading researcher on humans’ impact
Francine McCarthy, a Canadian researcher widely lauded for offering the most comprehensive geological evidence of human-caused planetary change, will give a free public talk at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. McCarthy will speak on “Finding the Golden Spike and the Onset of the Anthropocene.” A reception beginning at 3 p.m. will precede McCarthy’s talk.
Homecoming brings out all Salukis
With a week of Homecoming festivities, including the parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in downtown Carbondale, it’s a great time to cheer Saluki sports. The football Salukis host No. 2-ranked North Dakota State at 2 p.m. Saturday in Saluki Stadium. The women’s soccer team hosts Northern Iowa at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, and Missouri State at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, both at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex. Mountainfilm on Tour, a selection of culturally rich, adventure-packed, inspirational documentary films, is coming to Carbondale on Nov. 2, courtesy of SIU Carbondale’s Recreational Sports and Services. The free 7 p.m. showing is at the Varsity Theater, 418 S. Illinois Ave., but tickets are required.

The Department of Public Safety’s October 2024 issue of the “Saluki Watch Dawg” is available. In this month’s edition, learn more about SIU’s annual Security and Fire Safety report and the Clery Act, identity theft, Homecoming Week activities, vehicle immobilization and preventing traffic crashes on campus.
Reminder: Virtual appointments for faculty, staff regalia sale is Tuesday
Events and Outreach is hosting a virtual faculty and staff regalia sale through Herff Jones, a national provider of custom regalia. Graduate students wishing to purchase regalia rather than rent are also welcome. The university’s Herff Jones representative will be available between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, via online appointment to assist faculty and staff.
New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday
Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty and guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale. NAJ was formed in 1984 by several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. The performance will feature works by Sipho Gumede, Eddie Harris, Donald Harrison, Harold Lopez-Nussa, Jesús Molina and Joe Sample. The service will also be livestreamed on the Jazz Vespers at Epiphany Facebook page.
