SIU launches new program to better train counselors who treat complex trauma
A $1 million planned gift is establishing the Coffman-Crothers Training Institute for Trauma and Psychological Health Endowment Fund to help provide added training for counselors. A one-day symposium and training workshop is set for Oct. 11 at the SIU Simmons Law School. Registration is limited and due by Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Mandatory annual Ethics Act training begins Tuesday
Mandatory 2024 annual Ethics Act training for all SIU Carbondale faculty, staff, graduate assistants, undergraduate assistants, volunteers, student workers and extra help workers takes place Oct. 1-31 on the D2L platform. School of Medicine employees located on the Carbondale campus will complete training using HealthStream.
Reminder: Campus Appreciation Cookout is Wednesday
Faculty, staff and students are invited to share in the university’s recent successes at a campus appreciation cookout from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, between the Student Services Building Pavilion and Faner Hall. The event will be held rain or shine in that location. Food will be served out of the pavilion with sno-cones and a DJ in the Faner mall area. No reservations are required; just stop by and enjoy the fun and celebrate our accomplishments.
Remembrance event to honor SIU students who have passed away
Everyone is welcome to attend the “Once a Saluki, Always a Saluki” remembrance at Becker Pavilion on Campus Lake from 6 p.m. to sunset on Monday, Sept. 30. The event will honor all students who have died in recent years, including three Salukis who passed away separately this month.
Get tickets now to see Hunter Hayes at SIU’s Homecoming concert Oct. 9
Hunter Hayes, the youngest male performer to reach the top spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, will perform at SIU Carbondale’s 2024 Homecoming “Salukis on the Frontier” concert on Oct. 9 at Shryock Auditorium. Tickets are available in person and online.
Majors and Minors Fair is Oct. 24
Faculty and staff are asked to encourage undergraduate students who are searching for a major or minor to attend the Majors and Minors Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 24 in Student Center Ballroom B.
Several opportunities to see Saluki sports this weekend
The Saluki women’s softball team hosts Kaskaskia College with a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, in Charlotte West Stadium. The women’s soccer team hosts Murray State at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex. The Saluki men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams open their seasons on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois. Be sure to check team schedules at siusalukis.com.
Downtown Entertainment & Events Plaza groundbreaking is Saturday
A groundbreaking ceremony for Carbondale’s Downtown Entertainment and Events Plaza is at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28. The event will kick off the third annual Hemp, Hops & Shrooms festival, a fun-filled educational event that features the collaboration between the SIU Cannabis Science Center, SIU Fermentation Science Institute, Carbondale Main Street and the City of Carbondale. SIU will also host the fifth Southern Illinois Hemp Cannabis Symposium from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, at McLafferty Annex.
Record-setting night for Saluki football, fans
Although the outcome wasn’t what Saluki football fans expected in the “War for the Wheel” with Southeast Missouri State on Sept. 21, their passion definitely showed with high attendance and record-breaking revenue in key areas.
U.S. Marine Band performance is now standby only
All tickets for the U.S. Marine Band’s free performance on Oct. 8 in Shryock Auditorium have been claimed, and the concert is now standby only.
