900+ students to attend SIU Day on Wednesday to see academics in action
More than 900 students from 24 area high schools will meet faculty and staff on Wednesday, Sept. 18, to get a closer look at resources and academic programs at SIU Carbondale. Students will take part in academic breakout sessions, which include hands-on activities, in various locales on campus to see academic programs in action.
Roundtable talks to examine support for first year students
Faculty, staff and graduate assistants are invited to attend three first-year experience roundtable discussions this semester about supporting students in their first year at SIU Carbondale.
Sharp Museum South Hall now open
The Carl L. Lutes Gallery in the Sharp Museum South Hall is now open from noon to 4 p.m. each Tuesday through Thursday after flooring renovation. The gallery showcases Lutes’ personal collection of Renaissance and later furniture, tapestries and art. The gallery is open while the museum redesigns its exhibits.
SIU Carbondale to observe Constitution Day on Tuesday
The university will again observe Constitution Day on Tuesday, Sept. 17, with special activities at Morris Library and the Simmons School of Law.
SIU Simmons Law School to host Illinois Human Rights Commission talk on civil rights law
Representatives from the Illinois Human Rights Commission will be at SIU Simmons Law School on Wednesday, Sept. 18, to discuss human and civil rights laws in Illinois. The free, public presentation is set for 4:30 p.m. in the Lesar Law Building, Room 102.
Paul Simon Institute hosts award-winning author to discuss civil rights, presidential politics
Samuel Freedman, an award-winning author and journalist, will visit SIU Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute and present a lecture on civil rights and presidential politics in America at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. Registration to attend the discussion is recommended but not required.
Four faculty members receive 2024 SIU System Collaboration Award
Four faculty members from SIU Carbondale and SIU Edwardsville were awarded the Southern Illinois University System’s 2024 Faculty Collaboration Award at the SIU Board of Trustees meeting on Sept. 12. The recipients are Natasha Flowers (SIU Edwardsville) and Christie McIntyre (SIU Carbondale) for their work with the Illinois Tutoring Initiative and Mohtashim Shamsi (SIU Carbondale) and Mina Sumita (SIU Edwardsville) for their work on designing biomolecular probes to detect genetic biomarkers.
Morris Library to host inaugural Yellow Moon Gyroid Concert Series Sept. 19
The magic of music and mathematical principles intertwined will come to Morris Library on Thursday, Sept. 19, with the inaugural Yellow Moon Gyroid Concert Series. The free opening concert at 5 p.m. in the library's third-floor rotunda will feature SIU music faculty and students.
Reminder: Conversation of Understanding on productive dialogue strategies is Thursday
A Conversation of Understanding on Thursday, Sept. 19, will focus on the importance of dialogue in critical thinking skills and understanding. “The Power of Civil Discourse: Strategies for Productive Dialogue” will be a hybrid event — available both as a live virtual discussion, and for the first time, held on campus in SIU Carbondale Student Center’s Ohio Room.
Reminder: Registration open for higher education equity symposium in October
Registration is open for faculty, staff and students for the third annual Illinois Higher Education Equity Symposium at SIU Carbondale, Oct. 3-4.
