Registration open for higher education equity symposium in October
Registration is open for faculty, staff and students for the third annual Illinois Higher Education Equity Symposium at SIU Carbondale, Oct. 3-4.
The symposium will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 3 and 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Student Center. Registration is available online. For more information, contact SIU Carbondale’s Events and Outreach at 618-536-7751 or email Diane McIntyre at dmcintyre@siu.edu or Doris Williams at doris.williams@siu.edu.
The symposium’s goal is to provide a platform for participants to engage in meaningful discussions and share their experiences on how to promote equity in higher education. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by underrepresented groups and implement strategies to reduce harm and dismantle inequitable structures.
Speakers will include SIU System President Dan Mahony, SIU Chancellor Austin Lane and Jasmine Haywood, strategy director at Lumina Foundation, among others.
The SIU System, which is sponsoring the event, defines equity as “act right, make right and do right.” One of the system’s equity goals is to eliminate disparities in educational outcomes among diverse groups of students and to ensure all students have access to a quality education.
This includes reducing institutional achievement gaps, increasing access to higher education by providing financial aid and support services, and creating a welcoming environment for underrepresented students.
