$500K study focuses on removing ‘forever chemicals’ from water

Jia Liu, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, is using a $500,000 National Science Foundation grant to study how to eliminate PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” by using magnetic nanomaterials to treat contaminated groundwater.


Conversation of Understanding on productive dialogue strategies is Sept. 19 

A Conversation of Understanding on Thursday, Sept. 19, will focus on the importance of dialogue in critical thinking skills and understanding. “The Power of Civil Discourse: Strategies for Productive Dialogue” will be a hybrid event — available both as a live virtual discussion, and for the first time, held on campus in SIU Carbondale Student Center’s Ohio Room. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members are invited to join the discussion from noon to 1:30 p.m. 


Encourage grads to attend Grad Bash on Sept. 24 

Faculty and staff are encouraged to remind graduating seniors of Grad Bash on Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in University Bookstore in the Student Center. The event is for August and December 2024 graduates.


Paul Simon Institute to host political scientist, author Norm Ornstein

Political scientist Norm Ornstein, an emeritus scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, will assess the 2024 presidential campaign during a virtual discussion hosted by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16.


Saluki football opens home schedule Saturday  

The No. 9-ranked football Salukis open their home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 14, when they host No. 12-ranked Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. at Saluki Stadium. The women’s soccer team has a pair of home matches over the next week, hosting SIU Edwardsville at 6 p.m. today (Sept. 12) and Illinois State at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, both at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex. The women’s volleyball team hosts Missouri State at 4 p.m. Sept. 19. The Saluki women’s softball team opens its fall 2024 schedule with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, against John A. Logan College in Charlotte West Stadium. Reminder: SIU staff encouraged to attend a virtual wellness session Sept. 23

The SIU System will offer a wellness session for staff only on Sept. 23. The session on “Change Management in Practice” is from noon to 1 p.m. See the flyer for the link to the meetings and the credentials.

Online advance registration for the inaugural Rock Steady Boxing Run/Walk on Oct. 5 is underway. The cost is $10, and all ages are welcome.


Reminder: SIU Carbondale accepting honorary degree/service award nominations

The university is now accepting nominations for honorary degrees and distinguished service awards that will be presented at May 2025 commencement ceremonies. The nomination deadline is Oct. 16. Nominations are also open to the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.
