SIU to celebrate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month
SIU Carbondale will commemorate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month Sept. 15-Oct. 15 with a variety of special events recognizing the rich, diverse cultural heritage and numerous accomplishments of the peoples whose ancestors came to the United States from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America or South America. This year’s celebration theme is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future by Being Unified and Together.”
Celebrate our success on Oct. 2
The university’s recent successes, which include a 3.8% enrollment increase for fall 2024, will be celebrated with a campus appreciation cookout from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, between the Student Services Building Pavilion and Faner Hall.
Additional volunteers needed for SIU Day on Sept. 18
The number of local high school students expected to come to campus for SIU Day on Sept. 18 has grown from 500 to 900. And additional faculty and staff are needed to help lead groups to breakout sessions in the morning and afternoon. This is an excellent opportunity for faculty and staff to help students discover what makes SIU Carbondale the place to be and build upon the recent enrollment successes. SIU political, debate experts: Expect Harris to be formidable for Trump in presidential debate
Political and debate experts at SIU Carbondale see the Tuesday, Sept. 10, presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump as an opportunity for Harris to further introduce herself to the nation. And they predict Harris is a more formidable debate opponent for Trump than previous challengers.
Reminder: SIU’s stair climb to commemorate 9/11, War on Terror is Wednesday
The university will pay tribute to the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, with a workout session at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11. The 9/11 Saluki Stair Climb at Banterra Center involves a simulated 110-floor stair climb, representing the 110 floors of the World Trade Center twin towers, which were destroyed that day.
SIU Craft Shop offering sales, workshops and more this fall
The SIU Carbondale Craft Shop will offer a diverse lineup for its fall workshop series and hosts its popular poster sale today (Sept. 9) and Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Student Center first floor Art Gallery.
International students bring their culture’s food to local soup kitchen
A group of 13 Japanese university students studying at the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) connected with the local community Sept. 5 by preparing and serving a traditional Japanese meal to guests at the Herrin House of Hope.
Red Cross blood drive is Sept. 17 in Morris Library
September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and the American Red Cross and Morris Library are hosting a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 17 in the library first-floor rotunda. More information, including how to schedule an appointment, is available.
View this month’s ‘Saluki Watch Dawg’
The Department of Public Safety’s September 2024 issue of the “Saluki Watch Dawg” is available. Ahead of the Saluki football home opener on Saturday, Sept. 14, against Incarnate Word, this month’s edition includes information for faculty, staff and students on home football games, bicycle theft prevention tips, information about SIU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and a painted rock scavenger hunt.
