SIU Carbondale has highest enrollment jump in 33 years, bucks recent national trends
Enrollment at SIU Carbondale has risen for the second year in a row for the first time since 2000. And the freshman class increased for the fifth consecutive year.

Transition to Slate: phasing out EAB Navigate
Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management will streamline student communications by transitioning fully to Slate. The decision was made after a thorough assessment and gathering feedback from constituency groups. Sheryl A. Tucker, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, and Wendell Williams, vice chancellor for enrollment management, explain the decision and next steps.
U.S. Marine Band to perform Oct. 8 in Shryock Auditorium
The iconic U.S. Marine Band, designated as “The President’s Own” by President Thomas Jefferson, will give a free performance Oct. 8 in Shryock Auditorium. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Free tickets will be available online beginning Sunday, Sept. 8. There is a limit of four tickets per request.
Saluki Women's Weekend is Sept. 19-21
Erin Jackson, a captain with American Airlines and an SIU Aviation alumna, will be the keynote speaker during “Saluki Sisterhood: Empowering Today, Inspiring Tomorrow” on Sept. 19 at the Glenn Poshard Transportation Education Center as part of the third annual Saluki Women’s Weekend, Sept. 19-21. Hosted by the SIU Foundation Women's Leadership Council, the free, three-day event will feature multiple speakers, activities and panel discussions.
SIU Honors Program lecture, symposium to examine gyroids
A free, public lecture and symposium that examines the groundbreaking work of the late Alan Schoen, an SIU Carbondale professor who discovered the gyroid while working for NASA as a scientist, is set for 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6.
New agreement provides assistance with external funding proposals
Faculty are now eligible for external funding proposal assistance from a company partnering with the university. The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is contracting with Hanover Research to provide external funding proposal review and revisions services for faculty members with a primary appointment at the Carbondale campus.
SIU to host acclaimed organist Chelsea Chen in concert Sept. 20
Acclaimed international concert organist and composer Chelsea Chen will perform in a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20 for the Marianne Webb and David N. Bateman Distinguished Organ Recital Series.
Film, discussion on country music’s origins is Friday
“Open Country,” a documentary about country music’s origins that is the “authentic voice of working-class Americans” and far different from today’s polished musical performances, will be screened at Browne Auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6. The program is free and open to the public.
SIU first-year law, medical school students to focus on professional responsibility
More than 230 SIU Carbondale first-year professional students will confront and discuss current ethical legal and medical issues together on Friday, Sept. 6, at the SIU Simmons Law School.
Saluki volleyball opens home schedule Friday
The undefeated Saluki women’s volleyball team opens its home schedule this weekend hosting the Saluki Bash with matches on Friday, Sept. 6, against Jackson State at 10 a.m. and Memphis at 7 p.m. and Eastern Illinois at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, all at Banterra Center. The women’s soccer team has three home matches over the next week, hosting North Alabama at 6 p.m. today, Sept. 5; Lindenwood at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, and SIU Edwardsville at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, all at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex. New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday
Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty and guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale. NAJ was formed in 1984 by several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. The performance will feature works by Phil Brown, Cyrus Chestnut, Brent Hoyte, Milt Jackson, Thaddeus Tukes and Kamasi Washington. The service will also be livestreamed on Jazz Vespers at Epiphany Facebook page.
