New agreement provides assistance with external funding proposals

by Tim Crosby

CARBONDALE, Ill. – SIU Carbondale faculty are now eligible for external funding proposal assistance from a company partnering with the university.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is contracting with Hanover Research to provide external funding proposal review and revisions services for faculty members with a primary appointment at the Carbondale campus. The company has extensive experience supporting both complex, multi-principal investigator and individual grant proposals submitted to federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense, as well as private and nonprofit foundations, said Costas Tstatsoulis, vice chancellor for research.

“This partnership aims to improve the quality of grant proposals and increase the success rate of funding awards,” Tstatsoulis said.

Services offered by Hanover Research include holding teleconferences to discuss drafts before a formal review by the company and subsequent review of the proposal narrative to ensure alignment with the funding opportunity announcement. Company officials also will make specific recommendations using margin comments, provide a memo outlining high-level suggestions and hold a follow-up debriefing teleconference, among others.

Faculty members must apply to be considered for the program. The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research will manage submissions to the company, with several factors governing that process. Those include the faculty member’s willingness to share proposal materials and honor agreed-upon deadlines, the completeness of proposal documents, sponsor deadlines and current pipeline capacity. Faculty members should plan on a timeframe of three to four weeks.
