Nearly 1,850 students will be honored at commencement exercises

The academic achievements of nearly 1,850 SIU Carbondale students will be celebrated during spring 2024 commencement exercises May 10-11. Festivities start with the SIU Simmons Law School commencement on Friday, May 10, at Shryock Auditorium. On Saturday, May 11, Banterra Center will hold two ceremonies.


Saluki Takeover Tour: Join the fun Saturday at Walker’s Bluff

After traveling to each of Illinois’ 17 southernmost counties, including more than 20 school visits, the Saluki Takeover Tour of Southern Illinois will close with the Southern Illinois Celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Walker’s Bluff Casino Resort. Hosted by Chancellor Austin Lane, the free, public event will recognize incoming SIU students.


SIU’s Small Business Development Center named Illinois SBDC of the Year

The Illinois Small Business Development Center at SIU Carbondale is the 2024 Illinois SBDC of the Year, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. The prestigious award was presented during a special public ceremony at 10 a.m. today (May 2) at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center.


SIU law students’ trip to Kenya helps prepare them for globalized workplace

Law students Kameron Clay and Paige Berger were among 14 students who spent spring break in Kenya as part of a legal globalization and comparative law class taught by Simmons Law School course co-instructors Professor Chris Behan and Dean Camille Davidson.


Saluki Pride: Kelli Whittington receives Emerging Leader Award

Kelli Whittington, assistant professor and Bachelor of Science in Nursing program director, has been recognized for her dedication and efforts in leading SIU's nursing program from the early stages.She was recently presented the university's Emerging Leader Award, one of nine Excellence Awards.


Paul Simon Institute to probe future of local news with MacArthur Foundation president

John Palfrey, president of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at 10 a.m. Monday, May 6, for a virtual conversation on challenges confronting philanthropy and a major initiative to bolster local news organizations across the United States.


Pancake Study Jam is Sunday

The bi-annual Pancake Study Jam sponsored by SIU’s Leadership Development Program is from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, May 5, in Engineering Building Room A-111. The event is open to all majors.


Memorial service for former Chancellor Goldman is Sunday 

A memorial service for former SIU Carbondale Chancellor Samuel Goldman will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 5, in the Student Center Ballrooms.


Baseball Salukis host SIU Edwardsville next week 

Kim Baskin, a customer service representative in undergraduate admissions, is showing her Saluki pride. The Saluki baseball team hosts SIU Edwardsville at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 7. Be sure to check team schedules at siusalukis.com.  


Reminder: Faculty, staff sought for May 11 commencement volunteers 

Volunteer opportunities remain available for faculty, staff and members of the community who would like to assist graduating Salukis as they celebrate their accomplishments during SIU Carbondale’s commencement exercises at Banterra Center on May 11.


SIU Today begins summer schedule May 16 

After the spring semester ends on Saturday, May 11, SIU Today will begin its summer schedule and come out once a week, each Thursday, beginning May 16. Submission deadlines will remain the same. May 7 is the deadline for the May 9 edition.
