2024 Sturgis Awards for community service go to accountant, law school leader 

Michael Ruiz and Tracy Lake were honored today (April 11) at the SIU Board of Trustees meeting with the Lindell W. Sturgis Award for their extensive involvement with a variety of community organizations.


36 faculty members earn tenure, promotion

In its last two meetings, including today (April 11), the SIU Board of Trustees approved promotions in academic rank and tenure for 36 faculty members, effective with the 2024-2025 academic year or the 2025 fiscal year beginning in July.


Pamela Smoot earns SIU System ADEI recognition 

Pamela Smoot, an assistant professor of history in the School of History and Philosophy, received honorable mention recognition today (April 11) for the SIU System’s Dr. Wesley G. Robinson-McNeese ADEI Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognizes staff and faculty members with generally 20 years or more of documented service of creating, sustaining and expanding antiracism, diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. 


Great Cardboard Boat Regatta set for April 20

The 2024 Great Cardboard Boat Regatta makes its 49th appearance on April 20 where it all began, at Campus Lake. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun at the family friendly event, either as a participant or a spectator.


Acclaimed photographer Ruddy Roye presents lecture tonight

Jamaican-born documentary photographer Radcliffe Roye will present a free, public lecture at 7 p.m. today (April 11) in the Wham Education Building, Room 105.


Salukis Care Day on Friday focuses on helping students thrive 

Salukis Care Day 2024 is happening on Friday, April 12, and the goal for “Thriving and Surviving Saluki Strong,” is to help students with emotional wellness so they can thrive and succeed. The activities are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Faner Plaza, with the event moved to the Student Recreation Center if there is inclement weather.


SIU celebrates Earth Month in April

The university is celebrating Earth Month in April with a variety of special activities, highlighted by the Green Fund Award Ceremony on April 24 in Morris Library's John C. Guyon Auditorium.


Morris Library to celebrate Cricket magazine 50th anniversary and latest donation 

A reception celebrating the 50th anniversary of Cricket magazine, the children’s award-winning literary work that helped to launch the imagination and inquisitiveness of millions of youths, is from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, in Morris Library's Hall of Presidents and Chancellors.


Applications open for Thrasher Undergraduate Research Fund 

Applications are open for undergraduate students interested in competing for research funds through the Susan C. Thrasher Undergraduate Research Fund, offered through the Office of Vice Chancellor for Research. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. April 29.


Student Speakers Forum tonight to focus on short form content 

Five SIU Carbondale undergraduate students will share their thoughts on the increased use of short form content in delivering information in a free, public forum at 7 p.m. today (April 11) in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium.


SIU to offer accelerated online graduate programs this fall  

SIU Carbondale is launching eight online graduate degree programs with the support of Academic Partnerships. The graduate programs can be completed in as little as one year. The first cycle of classes begins Aug. 19, 2024. 


SIU photojournalism students to visit Alto Pass, Cobden as part of workshop 

Photojournalism students will receive vital insight into honing their skills Friday through Sunday, April 12-14, as they document people and events in Alto Pass and Cobden.


Salukis on the diamond this weekend 

Thousands of spectators showed their Saluki support on Monday during the April 8 total solar eclipse. Both the Saluki baseball and softball teams are at home this weekend. The SIU baseball team hosts Murray State Friday through Sunday, April 12-14, and Western Illinois at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at Itchy Jones Stadium. The Saluki softball team hosts Evansville Friday through Sunday at Charlotte West Stadium. New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday   

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, along with guests will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 14. NAJ was formed in 1984 among several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. The performance will feature works by Andy Armer and Randy Alpert, Maureen Choi and Alfredo Manzur, Jon Cowherd, Mike DeMicco, Mike Nock and Billy Taylor.
