A citizen-science project to listen to nature during the eclipse
Brent Pease, assistant professor, forestry, is partnering with the Eclipse Soundscapes project as part of a NASA-related effort to strategically place 100 sound recording instruments around the area to listen in on nature before, during and after the April 8 total solar eclipse.
Father Joseph Brown to present Glassman Lecture on Feb. 13
Father Joseph Brown, professor and director of the School of Africana and Multicultural Studies, is the keynote speaker for this spring’s Michael and Nancy Glassman Lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 13. He will present “Sankofa: Let the songs of the ancestors teach us to fly.” The free, public talk and reception is from 5-7:30 p.m. in the Christian H. Moe Laboratory Theater in the Communications Building, Room 1045. The lecture will also be available via Zoom; registration is available.
Virtual appointments available for faculty, staff regalia sale on March 4
Events and Outreach is announcing a virtual faculty and staff regalia sale through Herff Jones, a national provider of custom regalia. Graduate students wishing to purchase regalia rather than rent are also welcome.
Conversation on including student perspectives in decision-making is Feb. 26
A Conversation of Understanding on Feb. 26 will feature students from throughout the SIU System who will share their insights into how student success plays a pivotal role in the educational landscape. The discussion will center on the “no decision without us” principle, emphasizing the significance of including student perspectives in decision-making processes that directly impact students’ educational journeys. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members are invited to join the live virtual discussion at noon.
Reminder: Training to use mobile app for equipment inventory is this week
Mandatory training sessions for a newly developed program to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of SIU’s annual fixed asset equipment inventory with a mobile app are from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, and 10-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium, Room 140A. Attendance is required for all employees responsible for their unit’s equipment inventory. Pre-registration is not required. Staff members are welcome to attend either session based on their availability.
SIU celebrating TRIO week and recognizing achievements of TRIO scholars
The university is recognizing Feb. 19-24 as TRIO Week, in keeping with the national celebration, to highlight the university’s three TRIO programs and the accomplishments of the hundreds of traditionally disadvantaged students these programs have helped.
‘Love at the Glove’ 2024 is Friday
The annual “Love at the Glove” Valentine’s Day art show tradition returns Friday, Feb. 16, with an exhibition featuring works from SIU Carbondale students, faculty and the community. The student-run art show is from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Surplus Gallery inside the Glove Factory Studio Arts Building, 432 S. Washington St., Carbondale. Admission is $5.
Reminder: Sturgis Public Service Award nominations open
Nominations for the Lindell W. Sturgis Memorial Public Service Award, which honors an SIU Carbondale employee for their community work away from campus, are being accepted. Nominations must be received by Feb. 21.
Reminder: Network Empowering Women brown bag lunch is Wednesday
The first of three SIU Network Empowering Women (NEW) brown bag lunches for the 2024 spring semester is Wednesday, Feb. 14, in the Faculty and Staff Lounge at Old Main in the Student Center. The free event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and open to anyone interested in discussing issues affecting women on campus.
