Sharp Museum exhibition focuses on the coal industry

An exhibition that highlights the work of fine artist Michael K. Paxton’s deep roots in the West Virginia coal industry and tells the story of the region’s coal miners will be featured at Sharp Museum this spring.


MLK Breakfast is Monday at Student Center

The 42nd annual Carbondale NAACP Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast is Monday, Jan. 15, in the Student Center Ballrooms. The breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 8:30 a.m. Dylan Chambers, a senior in sport administration, Dawg Pound member and an alderman in Metropolis, Illinois, is the featured speaker. Everyone is welcome, and tickets are available at the door. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for youth.


SIU political experts: GOP Iowa caucus, N.H. primary is a battle for second

Just days before voters begin casting ballots, political experts with the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute believe the focus of the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire Republican primary is on who finishes second – and has a chance to earn the party’s nomination.


A/P performance evaluations due April 1

University policy requires that all administrative/professional staff have their work evaluated on an annual basis between Jan. 1 and March 31. The rating period to be used for evaluations for 2023 is Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. Evaluation forms are on the AIS e-forms website. Dates open for Chancellor’s Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main

The Chancellor’s Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main has openings available for the spring 2024 semester. Anyone interested in reserving the faculty-staff lounge for an event, or who would like to serve as a host, can email Events and Outreach at events@siu.edu.  


FAFSA completion sessions available for students this week 

Faculty and staff are encouraged to remind students that Financial Aid Office staff will be available next week to help them complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2024-2025 academic year. 


SIU welcomes students back to campus with fun events  

SIU will celebrate Salukis in Unity the first two weeks of the spring semester with a series of fun, engaging events to promote diversity and celebrate the uniqueness of each student as part of ongoing efforts to increase student involvement and foster college success. Units throughout campus are collaborating to present a wide variety of entertaining, educational activities for new and returning students.

If you know someone who inspires you with their incredible talent, passion and commitment, nominate them for a Faculty and Staff Excellence Award. The nomination deadline is 4:30 p.m. Jan. 26.


It’s time to get out the maroon

For Corné Prozesky, director, Recreational Sports and Services, this weekend means the Student Recreation Center will once again bustle with activity. On Saturday, Jan. 13, Shea Natatorium will be busy as the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams host Indiana State and Quincy at 1 p.m. The SIU men’s basketball team will also be busy with two upcoming Missouri Valley Conference games. The Salukis host Drake at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Banterra Center, and Bradley at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17. Be sure to check team schedules at siusalukis.com


Try scuba at SIU on Jan. 19

Faculty, staff, students and the community are welcome to enroll in a Try Scuba Diving class, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 19 in the Student Recreation Center's Shea Natatorium. The cost is just $45 per person. Participants need only bring swimsuits.


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday 

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, along with guests will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14. NAJ was formed in 1984 among several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time.  The performance will feature works by Victor Feldman, Russ Ferrante, Tom Harrell, Harold Land, Dennis Luxion and Cedar Walton.


SIU Today schedule 

There will not be an SIU Today issue on Monday, Jan. 15, as the university observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day. SIU Today will return Jan. 18. The submission deadlines remain the same. Tuesday, Jan. 16, is the deadline for the Jan. 18 edition.
