Newly designed Saluki license plates now widely available  

New collegiate SIU Carbondale license plates sporting a new look – the Saluki athletic logo with the beloved dog head – are now widely available. 


SIU to hold Veterans Day flagpole vigil, wreath-laying ceremony  

The university will publicly commemorate Veterans Day on Saturday, Nov. 11, with the annual vigil at the flagpole near the center of campus. In addition to the vigil and wreath-laying ceremony, a shadowbox posthumously honoring retired Lt. Col. Harvey Welch, an SIU alumnus, former SIU dean and vice chancellor of student affairs, and a member of Air Force ROTC Detachment 205, will be unveiled.


Big Muddy Film Festival returns Nov. 11 to highlight student, alumni work 

With a pivot that this year will focus on the works of SIU Carbondale cinema students and alumni, the iconic Big Muddy Film Festival returns to the region for a 45th consecutive year on Saturday, Nov. 11. The one-night festival is from 6-9:30 p.m. at The Varsity Theater, 418 S. Illinois Ave., Carbondale. Admission is free and open to the public.


SIU to host unique listening experience of Flaming Lips’ ‘Zaireeka’ album 

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) will host an immersive and interactive sound event on Friday, Nov. 10, with a special presentation of the Flaming Lips’ critically acclaimed “Zaireeka” studio album. The free, public presentation is at 7 p.m. in Lawson Hall, Room 171, which is equipped with spatial audio systems and high-definition cameras.


View this month’s ‘Saluki Watch Dawg’

The Department of Public Safety’s November 2023 issue of the “Saluki Watch Dawg” is available. This month’s edition has holiday season crime prevention tips, emergency kit reminders, university residence hall information for the Nov. 18-26 Thanksgiving break, available options for reporting crimes and a salute to DPS personnel who have served in the military. Prior Saluki Watch Dawg monthly newsletters are also available for review.


Nominations now open for student employee of the year awards 

Nominations can now be submitted for the 2024 SIU student employee of the year awards. In addition to the overall award for Student Employee of the Year, nominations will also be accepted to recognize students in five special categories: community service, diversity and inclusion, leadership, technology and innovation, and critical thinking. All nominations must be submitted by Jan. 19, 2024.


Wanted: Peer reviewers for Journal of Medical Science Scholarly Works   

All employees, retirees and emeriti faculty and staff are invited to share their expertise as volunteer peer reviewers, assisting the SIU School of Medicine in refining and reviewing cutting-edge research in patient care and team-based health care for the SIU Journal of Medical Science Scholarly Works. The open-access, peer-reviewed journal is published three times annually: spring, summer and fall.  


Register now for Patents Boot Camp on Nov. 8

The Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center is hosting a Patents Boot Camp, a free, one-day workshop to provide entrepreneurs, small businesses, inventors and anyone interested in patents with valuable information about the patent application process, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8.
