SIU researchers get $194K grant to stop algae from making toxins

A team of faculty researchers from the School of Biological Sciences, including Scott Hamilton-Brehm, Marjorie Brooks and Lahiru Jayakody, are working on a new technology aimed at mitigating harmful algae blooms using a molecular technique.


Paul Simon Institute hosts Pulitzer Prize novelist Richard Russo on Nov. 7

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and screenwriter Richard Russo, who taught in the university's English department in the 1980s, returns to campus Nov. 7 for a conversation hosted by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. Registration is encouraged, but not required.


Helicopter landings on campus part of weekend Army ROTC training exercises 

Army ROTC cadets at SIU will conduct exercises this weekend that will include helicopter landings on the campus’ far west side. The exercise will begin Friday, Oct. 27, and last through Sunday, Oct. 29. The training will include CH-47 helicopters from the Illinois National Guard landing near Stone Center to pick up ROTC cadets before flying them to the Illinois National Guard training area near Sparta, where they will join a larger Army ROTC training exercise.


250+ high school students to perform in SIU choral festival tonight

More than 250 high school students from 12 schools in the region are on campus today (Oct. 26) to participate in the annual high school choral festival. They will perform in a free, public concert in Shryock Auditorium.


Shryock Auditorium hosts Halloween Extravaganza of organ, flute music on Oct. 29  

The works of composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonín Dvořák, Jehan Alain and Maurice Duruflé, will envelop Shryock Auditorium on Sunday, Oct. 29, with a Halloween Extravaganza of music. The concert is free and open to the public.


Any time is right time to wear maroon 

Even if there aren’t as many sporting events over the next week, any time is great to show your maroon spirit, like Terrance Bishop, coordinator of student success and a recruitment and retention specialist in the College of Agricultural, Life, and Physical Sciences. The Saluki women’s basketball team hosts Greenville in an exhibition game at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the Banterra Center. SIU Homecoming 2023 winners announced

The Student Center administrative office was the winner of the Campus Door Decorating Contest for homecoming. Offices and units decorated doors and windows in a show of school spirit, with more than 30 doors entered. New Student Programs and Exploratory Student Advisement finished second and third, respectively.


Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter is available

The latest Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for October 2023 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.


Reminder: Mandatory Ethics Act training deadline is Tuesday

The deadline for mandatory 2023 annual Ethics Act training for all SIU Carbondale faculty, staff, graduate assistants, undergraduate assistants, volunteers, student workers and extra help workers on the D2L platform is Tuesday, Oct. 31. School of Medicine employees located on the Carbondale campus will complete training using HealthStream.


Reminder: Secretary of state office is on campus Tuesday 

Faculty, staff and students can utilize a number of services offered by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ office from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, in the Student Center Renaissance Room.
