Newest Saluki mural dedicated

Officials with the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, the city of Carbondale, the university and others celebrated Tuesday’s dedication of the latest Saluki mural at Mountain Valley Properties, 633 E. Main St. Painted by Antonio Martinez, associate professor, and students in the School of Art and Design, the mural is the second of three that are planned in Carbondale and part of a larger effort to show Saluki pride in SIU’s hometown, fitting well with the branding and partnerships pillar of the Imagine 2030 strategic plan. SIU Air Force ROTC detachment commander to give Memorial

Lt. Col. Jessica Dwyer, SIU Air Force Detachment 205 commander, will provide the keynote address for the city of Carbondale’s annual Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29, at historic Woodlawn Cemetery, 405 E. Main St. The ceremonies start at 10 a.m.


Law school hosts second Diversity Prelaw Summer Institute

Christy W. Solverson, right, First Judicial Circuit presiding judge in Jackson County, met Tuesday with high achieving juniors and seniors from colleges around the country as part of the SIU School of Law’s Diversity Prelaw Summer Institute at the courthouse in Murphysboro. The weeklong institute helps students gain insight on legal careers and prepare for law school. During the week, students participate in legal writing exercises, case briefings and a simulated law class, and learn about identifying legal career opportunities and financing law school. 30 Chancellor’s and Provost’s Scholars graduate

With exceptional efforts in their classrooms and community service, 30 Chancellor’s Scholars Program recipients earned their degrees during commencement ceremonies on May 13.


Saluki Pride: Jennifer Phillips receives SIU’s Women of Distinction Award

Jennifer Phillips, director of New Student Programs, is a double alumna of SIU, and in her nearly four years as a staff member, she has already made quite an impression on colleagues and the student families she works with.


‘Singing with the Stars’ kicks off SIU’s McLeod Summer Playhouse 2023 season

The long-celebrated McLeod Summer Playhouse will gear up for the 2023 season with performances from some of the region’s finest amateur singers and dancers. “Singing with the Stars” returns to SIU’s McLeod Theater stage at 7 p.m. Friday, June 2.


How SIU is helping students address mental health issues

Although May is Mental Health Awareness Month, helping students and the community with mental health needs is what SIU Carbondale is all about throughout the year, said Jaime Clark, director of Student Health Services.


Decal-By-Mail program available through Wednesday

The Department of Public Safety Parking Division’s Decal-By-Mail program for eligible faculty and staff for the fiscal year 2024 is available through Wednesday, May 31. Applicants must use payroll deduction. The salary range for decal categories has not been increased. Faculty, staff and students are reminded that parking rules are still in effect over the summer. Flexible schedule summer program

Eligible employees are reminded of an employee flexible schedule program again this summer. The program begins Sunday, May 28, and will continue through July 29.


Benefit Choice open enrollment deadline

The deadline for the State Employees Group Insurance Program Benefit Choice open enrollment for all eligible employees is May 31. For the upcoming year, there are no premium increases. Employees are encouraged to review the Benefits Choice Booklet and select the best coverage for themselves and/or their families.


SIU staff encouraged to attend a virtual wellness session June 5 

The SIU System will offer a wellness session for staff only on June 5. The session on emotional intelligence is from noon to 1 p.m. and will be led by David Ziebler, director of organizational and employee development in the SIU School of Medicine's Center for Human and Organizational Potential.


Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter is available

The monthly Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for May 2023 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.
