SIU professor aims to prevent fraud caused by ‘sock puppet’ social media accounts
Sajedul Talukder, assistant professor in the School of Computing and director of the Security and Privacy Enhanced Machine Learning Lab, has received a $158,000 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Computer and Information Science and Engineering Research Initiative to investigate ways to prevent “sock puppet” connection requests, which are false online identities and user accounts created for deceptive purposes.
Saluki Pride: Kenneth Stikkers lays the foundation for diverse philosophers
When considering the impact that Kenneth Stikkers, a professor of philosophy and affiliated faculty in Africana and Multicultural Studies, has on former students, understanding Stikkers’ selection for a prestigious mentorship award from the Caribbean Philosophical Association is easy. Chancellor Lane hosts faculty-staff lounge on Monday
Chancellor Austin Lane will be the host from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, March 21, for the Chancellor’s Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main, located in the Student Center. The lounge is a place for faculty and staff to meet in an informal setting and get to know one another across departments. Anyone interested in reserving the faculty-staff lounge for an event, or who would like to serve as a host, can email events@siu.edu.
Acclaimed Outside the Box new music festival begins today
Musical interests and influences will be center stage once again beginning this week as the Outside the Box 2022 new music festival continues the rich history of bringing internationally known musicians and performers to campus. The festival, in its 15th year, runs March 17-26 at various locations on campus and in Carbondale.
SIU, Rock Valley College strengthen access for transfer students
The university strengthened its commitment to students in Boone and Winnebago counties on March 14 with a Saluki Step Ahead pact with Rock Valley College. The agreement brings the expertise of a doctoral research university to qualified community college students by providing the option to earn their bachelor’s degrees remotely and at a lower cost.

SIU alumnus presents ‘The Queer’s Guide to Country Music’ on Friday
Colin Whitworth, a visiting guest artist and SIU alumnus, will bring his one-person show “The Queer’s Guide to Country Music” to the Kleinau Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday, March 18. The show is free and open to the public.
