SIU awards fellowships to promote faculty ethnic diversity

Leonard K. Gadzekpo and Raymund E. Narag were recently named Judge William Holmes Cook Fellows. Every three years, the university awards two fellowships to minority tenure or tenure-track faculty members in Cook’s name. The Cook estate endows the fellowships in order to increase and maintain racial and ethnic diversity at SIU.


Saluki Pride: Jan Thompson nominated for Chicago/Midwest Emmy

Award-winning documentary producer and writer Jan Thompson, a director and professor in the School of Journalism and a professor in the College of Arts and Media, will be seeking a fourth Chicago/Midwest Emmy next month. One of the best things with this project was all of the Saluki crew in the production were former or present students. Nominating a colleague is easy; simply fill out this form.


Moderna COVID-19 booster clinic is Friday, Saturday

The Jackson County Health Department will hold a COVID-19 vaccination clinic at the Carbondale Civic Center on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19-20, to administer booster doses of Moderna. Vaccination hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Appointments are required and can be made online or by calling the Jackson County Health Department at 618-684-3143.


Faculty-student forum on academic success is tonight

The campus community is invited to a “Faculty-Student Forum: A Campus Conversation on Academic Success” from 5:30 to 7:30 tonight, Nov. 18, in the Student Center Auditorium. The forum will also be streamed via Zoom.


Competition among colleges to register students

In an effort to have 90% of returning students register for spring classes before Dec. 1, colleges are having a friendly competition. The college with the highest percentage of registered students wins. At the end of the six-week registration period, the winning college team members, which include the dean, school directors, recruitment and retention coordinators, and academic advisors, will receive a sponsored lunch and polo shirts.


Federally mandated training for preventing harassment and discrimination is due by Dec. 31 

All faculty and staff are expected to complete the federally mandated Preventing Harassment and Discrimination training by Dec. 31.


Additional ‘Shawnee Showdown’ film screening is tonight

A second screening of an hourlong documentary by a Southern Illinois University Carbondale film professor that retraces the battle over commercial logging within the Shawnee National Forest more than three decades ago is at 6:30 tonight, Nov. 18, at the Varsity Theater in Carbondale.


Paul Simon Institute will host leading climate change expert next week

Climate change expert Alice Hill will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute for a virtual conversation on Tuesday, Nov. 23.


SIU Today holiday schedule 

SIU Today is taking a holiday on Thursday, Nov. 25, in observance of Thanksgiving. SIU Today will publish on Monday, Nov. 22, and return on Nov. 29. The last issue before winter break will be Dec. 9. SIU Today will then resume in January.
