SIU researchers aim to turn trash from coffee, tea into biodegradable plastic treasure

Led by Lahiru Jayakody, assistant professor of microbiology, researchers at SIU Carbondale are working on promising technologies that could bring a molecular-level, sustainable solution to the table while still making it easy to enjoy your favorite beverages. All we have to do is keep drinking coffee and tea.

‘Orange Is the New Black’ author Piper Kerman will speak at SIU

Piper Kerman, author of “Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison,” the bestselling book that became a Netflix series, is coming to campus on Nov. 4, and free tickets for her presentation are now available. Kerman will speak at 7 p.m. in Shryock Auditorium. Her presentation is part of the Elmer H. Johnson Criminology and Criminal Justice Lecture Series. A book signing will follow at 8:30 p.m.

Flu immunizations are available on campus Tuesday, Wednesday

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS) will be providing free flu immunizations until Nov. 15 for all active and retired SIU Carbondale employees, as well as surviving spouses enrolled in a state-sponsored health plan. The two walk-up flu shot clinics are set for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 26-27 in the SIU Alumni Association Courtyard at Woody Hall.

Federally mandated training for preventing harassment and discrimination is due Nov. 1 

All faculty and staff are reminded the federally mandated training deadline on Preventing Harassment and Discrimination for Higher Education is Monday, Nov. 1. All faculty and staff received an important email sent by everfi-foundry.net on Oct. 1 that appears from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Open Studio, C4 exhibition is Friday 

Faculty, staff and the university community are invited to the annual Open Studio event hosted by graduate students in the School of Art and Design’s MFA program starting at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29.
