Carbondale, SIU to host Patriot Day ceremony on Saturday

The city of Carbondale and the university are hosting a Patriot Day ceremony to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks and honor the nation’s first responders. The brief ceremony is set for 9 a.m. at the flagpole in front of Altgeld Hall.


Saluki Pride: José Ruiz’ passion is being a mentor to both students and faculty

José Ruiz’s aviation career has lasted more than four decades, including the last 26 years with SIU’s nationally recognized program. He’s earned numerous accolades, including leading the University Aviation Association and chairing national panels on runway safety issues. But his passion is helping students realize their full potential and mentoring faculty. Ruiz is featured this week in Saluki Pride, which profiles faculty and staff whose work is integral to the university’s success. Nominating a colleague is easy; simply fill out this form.


Vaccination clinics continue next week

The free, on-campus COVID-19 vaccination clinics in the Student Center Cambria Room have been extended another week and are open to faculty, staff and students. The first- and second-dose clinics will be held today, Friday and Sept. 13-17. Second dose vaccinations will also be available Oct. 4-8. Information on vaccinations, including times, and campus pandemic safety protocols is available at siu.edu/coronavirus


Chancellor’s Faculty and Staff Lounge at Old Main opens

As a way for faculty and staff to get to know one another across departments, some space in the Student Center will be set aside from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Made possible with a donation from the SIU Foundation, the university opened the Chancellor’s Faculty and Staff Lounge at Old Main.


Artist Dayo Laoye to present lecture tonight

Artist Dayo Laoye will present a lecture at 7 p.m. today, Sept. 9, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. The lecture is open to the public and is part of the university’s Visiting Artist Program and sponsored by the School of Art and Design.


Political activists ‘The Yes Men’ coming to campus next week

“The Yes Men,” an internationally renowned social and political activist duo, will present a lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14 in the Student Center Auditorium. The duo of Jacques Servin and Igor Vamos use satire and prankster tactics to provide a collaborative effort to bring awareness to and expose problematic corporate and government issues.


‘Illinois Ethics Matters’ newsletter is available

The monthly Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for August 2021 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is at siusystem.edu/ethics.


Registration underway for SIU’s fall adventure trips

Fall adventure trips to Missouri and the Blue Ridge Mountains highlight offerings this fall by Recreational Sports and Services Basecamp. The journeys are open to the community, students, faculty and staff. The registration deadline for the first trip is Friday, Sept. 10.


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday 

New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12.
