Morris named interim associate provost for academic administration

Marc E. Morris, director and professor in SIU Carbondale’s School of Accountancy, has been named the interim associate provost for academic administration. He replaces David Dilalla, who retires Sunday, Aug. 1. The appointment, effective July 23, is pending approval by the SIU Board of Trustees in September.


Saluki Pride: Tammy Kochel brings real-world experiences, research to the classroom

Tammy Rinehart Kochel, professor, criminology and criminal justice, has been at the forefront of policing research for more than 20 years, even predating significant incidents that contributed to police reform in places such as Ferguson, Missouri. Kochel is featured this week in Saluki Pride, which profiles faculty and staff whose work is integral to the university’s success. Nominating a colleague is easy; simply fill out this form.


Important updates to SIU’s COVID website

As the fall semester approaches, SIU Carbondale will continue to inform the campus community of its plans and update the COVID-19 website, siu.edu/coronavirus. Recent additions include:

  • Requirements for face-mask use indoors.
  • A link to the map of community transmission by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Results of the survey of students, faculty and staff about their vaccination status or plans for vaccination. Almost 80% of respondents reported they were fully vaccinated or plan to receive their second shot before fall classes start.

REMINDER: Saluki Safety update forum on Monday

A virtual panel presentation about COVID-19 safety measures and the fall semester will start at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 2. The Saluki Safety update will be hosted by Chancellor Austin A. Lane and include information on safety protocols, initiatives to encourage vaccinations and other topics. Panelists will respond to questions submitted by the campus community. The presentation will be shown live at chancellor.siu.edu and the chancellor's YouTube channel, where it will also be posted for later viewing. 


Seymour Bryson Future Scholars Program returns to promote student success

A group of almost 30 new Salukis has been enjoying a four-week immersive learning experience on campus. It’s all about giving them a jumpstart toward success in their college careers.


SIU establishing new doctoral fellowship program for equity and social justice in education

This fall, the School of Education is launching a new doctoral fellowship program with an emphasis in educational equity and social justice. The new program is a response to the diversity, equity and inclusion challenges that Dean M Cecil Smith and his colleagues have observed in the world and the nation.


SIU law school adds holistic bar exam prep program to assist students 

Starting this fall, SIU’s School of Law students will have an affordable advantage of working with a holistic bar exam preparatory program while in law school and after graduation as they prepare to become licensed attorneys.


‘Illinois Ethics Matters’ newsletter is available

The monthly Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for July 2021 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is at siusystem.edu/ethics.
