“The Views of Police Officers Toward Gun Legislation and Public Health Policies Driven by Firearm Safety Concerns,” co-authored by Tammy Rinehart Kochel, professor of criminology and criminal justice and associate dean for research and personnel in the College of Health and Human Sciences, is in the December 2023 issue of The Journal of Community Health.

“Sly the Cool Cat,” by LaShonda M. Stewart, associate dean and professor, College of Business and Analytics, was recently published. The children’s book teaches children “how to stay true to who they are.”

SIU Press recently won the 2023 Wendy Allen Award for Institutional Excellence from the Lincoln Forum in honor of SIU Press’ Concise Lincoln Library (CLL) series of books. The award is given annually to an organization or institution that “does exceptional work helping the public learn about Lincoln or the Civil War.” Past winners include the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, The Lincoln Museum, and the Gettysburg Foundation. In addition, the CLL series co-editors received the Harold Holzer Lincoln Forum Book Prize for their work.

Gender and Deterritorialized Identity: Sonia Boyce, Latifa Echakhch, and Zineb Sedira at the 59th Venice Biennale,” a research article by Laurel Jean Fredrickson, associate professor, art history, School of Art and Design, was published recently in the Nov. 1 issue of the Nka Journal of Contemporary African Art.

Jeremy Allen, assistant lecturer, sociology, in the School of Anthropology, Political Science and Sociology, presented “Structural Racism and White Supremacy” on Dec. 4 at the 2023 Illinois Minority Health Conference, “Achieving a Healthy Illinois by Eliminating Health Disparities.” The conference, Dec. 3-5, at Illinois State University, was hosted by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Greg Whitledge, professor, zoology and Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences, recently participated in the Fish Endangered Species Technical Advisory Committee meeting at the Forbes Natural History Building at the University of Illinois to assess the status of endangered and threatened fish in Illinois.

Susan Wegmann, executive director, SIU Extended Campus, recently co-authored a chapter on “Facilitating Online Discussions” for The Sage Handbook of Online Higher Education. The chapter presents strategies for effectively facilitating online discussions and gauging the effectiveness of those discussions. 

Omid Kamran Disfani, assistant professor, marketing, School of Management and Marketing, recently provided information on WalletHub.com about the use of store credit cards.
