Kofi Akamani, associate professor in the School of Forestry and Horticulture, is one of the authors of the Fifth Annual Climate Assessment, Chapter 8: Ecosystems, Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity. The report recently was presented by the lead authors at the White House. Akamani conducts research in rural communities in Ghana and the U.S., aimed at better understanding and enhancing the resilience of rural, resource-dependent communities and the adaptive governance of forests, water resources and agricultural landscapes in the face of climate change impacts and other drivers
“The Tao of Glass,” a feature highlighting the work of Jiyong Lee, professor, School of Art and Design, is in the fall 2023 edition of “Glass: The UrbanGlass Art Quarterly.”
Molly Parker-Stephens, assistant professor, School of Journalism and Advertising, along with reporting partner Beth Hundsdorfer earned first place in the Large Media category in the National Center on Disability and Journalism’s annual journalism contest for their monthlong series “Culture of Cruelty.” The series revealed patient abuse, neglect and coverups at a state-run developmental center in Southern Illinois and similar facilities elsewhere. The series was produced in partnership with Capitol News Illinois, Lee Enterprises Midwest and ProPublica. Parker-Stephens also participated in a panel discussion at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication on their work and best practices for covering people with disabilities and disability issues.
Seung-Hee Lee, professor of fashion studies, and Ying Chen and Jun Qin, associate professors of electrical, computer and biomedical engineering, presented their collaborative eye-tracking research, "Collaboration Between Fashion and Engineering: How Do Fashion Students Apply Visual Attention Prediction?" at the International Textile and Apparel Association conference in Baltimore, Nov. 8-11. In addition to this paper, Lee presented five other papers at the conference.
Jaemin Park, assistant professor of lighting and sound design, School of Theater and Dance, was recently highlighted in Theater Design and Technology magazine for being chosen one of 12 outstanding designers for the United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT) 2023 Design Expo. Park also received the 2023 Barbizon Lighting Company Jonathan Resnick Lighting Design Award earlier this year.
Camille Davidson, dean, SIU School of Law, was a guest speaker at the 10th National HBCU Pre-Law Summit and Law Expo, Sept. 21-23, at the University of the District of Columbia. The summit is the only major national pre-law event specifically focused on addressing the unique challenges HBCU students and graduates face.
Pattie Chalmers, professor and head of graduate studies in the School of Art and Design, will present an artist talk at 6 p.m. Nov. 8 as part of a gallery opening for the art show “Manitoba Sugar” at the Arkansas State University Fine Arts Center. Chalmers will have more than 100 objects in the exhibition that runs until the end of December.
