The School of Journalism’s “The 1857 Project,” published in spring 2020 by the Gateway Journalism Review, earned a Sigma Delta Chi Award in Journalism in the magazine writing (regional/local circulation) category this month and an honorable mention in May from the American Bar Association’s 2021 Silver Gavel Awards for Media and the Arts in the magazine category. The edition, which included works by SIU students and faculty, offered a historical retrospective on slavery, segregation and other aspects of racism in the St. Louis metro area and Illinois.
“Women, Mysticism, and Hysteria in Fin-de-Siècle Spain” by Jennifer Smith, associate professor, Spanish, and chair, Languages, Cultures, and International Trade, was published earlier this month by Vanderbilt University Press. The work is the first book-length study on the 19th and early 20th century debate on women, mysticism and hysteria in Spain.

The American Association of Law Libraries has recognized Douglas Lind, SIU School of Law library director and professor, with the 2021 Joseph L. Andrews Legal Literature Award for “The Leaven of Sympathy: A Bio-Bibliography of Frederick C. Hicks,” which he co-authored with Stacia Stein of Yale Law Library. The result of several years of archival and bibliographic research, Lind and Stein’s book provides a detailed examination of the life and works of one of the founders of the profession of law librarianship. Issued annually since 1967, the national award recognizes “a significant textual contribution to legal literature.”
