SIU earns national honors for assisting transfer students

The university is being honored for its commitment as one of the nation’s top transfer-friendly institutions by an academic honors society for associate-degree granting colleges and universities. SIU Carbondale is among 208 public and private colleges and universities listed on Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s 2023 Transfer Honor Roll, which recognizes excellence in the development and support of dynamic and innovative pathways for community college transfer students.


Spot on: SIU’s Saluki Aces finish second in 2023 Air Race Classic

Trusting their instincts and making smart decisions to overcome difficult weather paid off last week for SIU Aviation’s Saluki Aces Meadow Boden and Graci McDaniel. The pair finished second — both overall and in the collegiate division — of the 46th transcontinental Air Race Classic.


SIU System Faculty Collaboration Award nominations open 

The Faculty Advisory Committee for the SIU System (FACSS) is accepting applications for its inaugural Faculty Collaboration Award. The annual award will recognize faculty for impactful collaborative endeavors across campuses in the areas of teaching, scholarship and creative activities, service and/or antiracism, diversity, equity and inclusion.


Fireworks display is Tuesday

SIU and the city of Carbondale announced the annual fireworks display on campus. The show will be held at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, at the Banterra Center. Learn more about the show and parking details. There will also be food available from vendors. In the event of rain on July 4, the fireworks display will be Wednesday, July 5, also at 9:15 p.m.


Saluki Pride: Tina Sickinger wins SIU’s A/P Staff Excellence Award  

Much of her work is behind the scenes, but Tina Sickinger plays a very pivotal role in the university’s success. Sickinger, the recruitment and retention officer for the Graduate School, School of Law and Center for International Education, received the university’s Staff (Administrative/Professional) Award recently, one of eight Excellence Awards to honor faculty and staff for superior scholarship and creative endeavors, teaching and service.


Kendra Bumpus is the new director of SIU’s residence life and university housing  

SIU Carbondale alumna Kendra Bumpus has been selected as the new director of residence life and university housing.

SIU melds art and science with anatomical drawing workshop July 13-16

A pilot workshop next month will give participants a chance to discover a longstanding Renaissance era tradition of artistic anatomy by studying cadavers and learning from human anatomy and medical experts. The intensive four-day Artistic Anatomy Drawing Workshop, July 13-16, melds the arts and sciences and is designed for artists age 18 and older who are interested in studying and creating anatomically accurate and artistic drawings from direct observations of cadavers. This is the first time SIU has offered the workshop.
