SIU engineering students create robot for crop inspection
The days of a farmer wandering a field and inspecting the crops may be coming to an end, as SIU Carbondale engineering students Curtis Shuman and Cameron Schwartzberg have designed a robot to monitor soybean plants as they are growing.
Business administration among U.S. News’ ‘Best Online Programs’
SIU Carbondale’s online business and administration program has earned national recognition for excellence, claiming a spot for the first time on the U.S. News & World Report 2025 Best Online Programs rankings. The program is within the top 25%, tied for No. 54.
U.S. Rep. Krishnamoorthi to discuss public service at Lesar Lecture
U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois will discuss his time in Congress and a few of his signature legislative achievements when he presents the free, public Hiram H. Lesar Distinguished Lecture at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at SIU’s Simmons Law School, Room 102.
Volunteers sought for World Languages and Cultures Day
Volunteer opportunities are available for faculty, staff and students who would like to help show off SIU Carbondale during World Languages and Cultures Day on Feb. 3. The program is from 8:30 a.m. to noon in various locations in the Student Center.
A/P performance evaluations due March 31
University policy requires that all administrative/professional staff have their work evaluated on an annual basis between Jan. 1 and March 31.
SIU Chamber Music Society concert is Jan. 25
A string quartet, comprising faculty from the School of Music and featuring pianist Doreen Lee, will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the SIU Old Baptist Foundation.
Reminder: Faculty and Staff Excellence Award nominations due Friday
The nomination deadline for Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards is 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24.

A virtual Conversation of Understanding from noon to 1:30 p.m. today (Jan. 23) will focus on the work of the state’s African Descent-Citizens Reparations Commission (ADCRC).
