Inaugural Southern Illinois Outdoor Summit is March 28
Registration is open for Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center’s inaugural Southern Illinois Outdoor Summit. The free March 28 event will feature keynote speakers, workshops, outdoor demonstrations and networking opportunities to foster growth in the region’s outdoor industry.
Paul Simon Institute hosts art history professor to discuss Alexander the Great
Rachel Kousser, a professor at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York, will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute on Wednesday, Jan. 15, for a virtual discussion on classical studies and the legacy of Alexander the Great.
King Scholarship Breakfast is next Monday
Tickets are available for the 43rd King Scholarship Breakfast hosted by the Carbondale branch of the NAACP on Monday, Jan. 20, in the Student Center. The program, “Protecting Freedom, Justice and Equality in the Spirit of Nonviolence 365,” honors the legacy of civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Food will be served at 7:30 a.m. with the program starting at 8:30 a.m. Tickets are $10 each. There is also a canned food collection for the Saluki Food Pantry.
Dates open for Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main
The SIU Carbondale Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main has several openings available for the spring 2025 semester. Anyone interested in reserving the faculty-staff lounge for an event, or who would like to serve as a host, can email Events and Outreach at events@siu.edu.
Updates on transition to Slate
SIU has completed significant advancements in integrating academic data, advisement tools and a student dashboard into Slate, with upcoming projects focused on real-time data updates, early alerts and academic support enhancements to be finalized by May. Reminder: Faculty and Staff Excellence Award nominations
The nomination deadline for Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards is 4:30 p.m. Jan. 24.
School of Music voice faculty in concert on Friday
School of Music voice faculty David Dilliard, Carissa Scroggins and Angela Shultz, with Yuko Kato on piano, will present a free, public concert at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall.
Fund honoring aviation management graduate is established
The SIU Foundation has established the Tammera Holmes School of Aviation DEI Faculty Endowment to help ensure the educational environment reflects the diversity of the aviation workforce and student body. Holmes, the founder and CEO of Aerostar Avion Institute, passed away in December.
Fall 2024 semester graduation, deans’ lists
The university’s fall 2024 degree candidates and deans’ lists are available on the SIU news website. Commencement ceremonies were held Dec. 14 at SIU’s Banterra Center.
SIU Today schedule
There will not be an SIU Today issue on Monday, Jan. 20, as the university observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The submission deadline for Thursday, Jan. 23, remains the same: Tuesday, Jan. 21.
