SIU political experts: History will treat Jimmy Carter ‘kindly’
Although he spent just four years in the White House and his humanitarian works after leaving office are widely applauded, SIU Carbondale political experts say former President Jimmy Carter’s legacy includes significant and impressive successes while in office. Carter, the nation's oldest living president, died Dec. 29. Services to honor the former president continue through today, Jan. 9.
SIU chooses dean for College of Agricultural, Life and Physical Sciences
Kristina Boone, director of Ohio State University’s Agricultural Technical Institute and a leader in agricultural education in Ohio, will be the next dean of the College of Agricultural, Life and Physical Sciences. She will begin her duties at SIU this summer.
SIU leaders monitoring the weather
With snow in the forecast, SIU Carbondale leaders continue to monitor the weather and will inform the campus community via text and email if the university closes. In the meantime, faculty and staff should take two important steps to prepare: review the campus policy and ensure that the university has your current cellphone number if you want to receive emergency text alerts.
Student Recreation Center hosts Community Day on Sunday
This is your chance to explore for free the myriad equipment, facilities and services the Student Recreation Center has to offer. Everyone is welcome at Community Day 2025, set for 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12.
SIU Alumni Association publishes winter magazine
The winter all-digital issue of the SIU Alumni Association is available online now. Features include more than 3,500 packing The Strip in Carbondale for the Homecoming concert, an alumnus who runs a friendly neighborhood bar and grill in Wrigleyville and information on the Saluki Market. The new digital version is accessible on any device but best read on a computer screen or laptop.
Food Works conference set for Tuesday
The Food Works’ Southern Illinois Farming Alliance Conference is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Pavilion in Marion. Attendees will have the chance to engage with resource organizations including SIU Carbondale, hear from keynote speakers, and receive updates from Food Works of Southern Illinois. The free conference will cover topics related to promoting long-term farming networks that foster healthy soils, healthy food and healthy communities. Lunch is free for those who register. Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter is available
The latest Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for December 2024 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.
The new year features Saluki hoops
Start the new year with some Saluki basketball. The men’s basketball team hosts Missouri State at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Banterra Center. Be sure to check team schedules at siusalukis.com.
SIU’s Export Controls newsletter is available
The monthly SIU Export Controls newsletter for December 2024 is available. The newsletter provides a resource for current export control issues and events that could affect SIU and its faculty. This edition includes international travel tips to high-risk countries.
New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday
Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty and guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale. NAJ was formed in 1984 by several School of Music faculty and has been in residence from that time. The performance will celebrate the music of Les Baxter, Jerry Brock, Oscar Castro-Neves, Harmon/Lloyd/Phillinganes, Biff Smith and McCoy Tyner. The service will also be livestreamed on the Jazz Vespers at Epiphany Facebook page.
