19-year-old with a passion for languages to graduate Dec. 14 

Focused and driven. Those characteristics have served SIU Carbondale senior Noah Clark quite well during his time on campus. Clark, who is 19, will receive a bachelor's degree with a double major in linguistics and languages, cultures and international studies with a concentration in Spanish and be the youngest of nearly 1,600 graduates on Saturday, Dec. 14.


SIU Carbondale to honor nearly 1,600 grads at fall 2024 commencement 

The academic achievements of nearly 1,600 SIU Carbondale students will be celebrated at fall 2024 commencement exercises on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Banterra Center.


Internship leads to major gift to School of Media Arts

SIU senior cinema and theater student A.J. Rice’s internships led to a gift-in-kind of more than $350,000 in lighting and grip equipment from MBS, Inc., to the School of Media Arts.


Conversation of Understanding on diversity in medicine is Dec. 11 

A Conversation of Understanding on Wednesday, Dec. 11, will focus on enhancing inclusivity in the medical field. The free, virtual session, hosted by the SIU School of Medicine, will include the documentary “Faces of Medicine,” which captures the stories of five Black female physicians in the United States. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, health care professionals and community members are invited to view the film and join the discussion from noon to 1:15 p.m.


Reminder: Campus financial reports discussion is Dec. 11-12

Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Susan Simmers is inviting SIU Carbondale fiscal officers, fiscal officer delegates and other users of AIS and PLABIS to attend an information session on campus financial reports Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 11-12, at Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium.


Human Rights Day 2024 awards dinner is Tuesday 

The Bethel AME Feed My Sheep community kitchen and Margaret J. Nesbitt, who has spent decades helping children to read, will receive 2024 Human Rights Day Awards from the Southern Illinois chapter of the United Nations Association during a ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 10.


SIU, AISIN partner to provide employees with degrees, experience

The School of Applied Engineering and Technology in the College of Engineering, Computing, Technology and Mathematics is cooperating with a local electronics manufacturer to educate workers.


Reminder: Mandatory Title IX training is due Friday 

SIU Carbondale employees are reminded to complete mandatory training on new Title IX regulations by Friday, Dec. 13. Employees should have received an email on Oct. 15 from Vector Solutions with training information for “Preventing Harassment and Discrimination Supervisors + Clery Act and Title IX.” The link to the training is also available on the Office of Equity and Compliance website.   


SIU pinning ceremony for new teacher graduates is Wednesday

About 35 graduate candidates from SIU Carbondale’s Teacher Education Programs will be recognized during a special pinning ceremony at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Shryock Auditorium.


Supplemental retirement, deferred compensation plans updated 

The Internal Revenue Service has increased the amounts individuals can contribute to their 403(b) and 457(b) accounts for 2025.


New Arts Jazztet to perform Dec. 14

The New Arts Jazztet is among the featured musicians set to perform at the Ivas John’s Blue Christmas Concert, Saturday, Dec. 14, at The Varsity Center.
