History major is 2024 Lincoln Academy student laureate

Carlos Gomez, a history major from Geneva, Illinois, was named the 2024 Lincoln Academy of Illinois student laureate for SIU Carbondale at ceremonies on Oct. 26 in Springfield.


Everyone invited to SIU’s Student Center Halloween festivities

Everyone is invited to celebrate Halloween Saluki-style at the Student Center on Thursday, Oct. 31. The highlight is the free Halloween Bash from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballrooms.


Paul Simon Institute hosts Pulitzer Prize-winning author on Jimmy Carter’s statesmanship

Kai Bird, a highly respected biographer and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, for a virtual discussion on the statesmanship of former President Jimmy Carter.


Saluki Takeover Tour makes inaugural trip to Memphis

The Saluki Takeover Tour is expanding its reach to new areas of the country this year, and the first new stop was in Memphis. Chancellor Austin Lane, staff from the SIU Foundation, SIU Admissions, SIU Alumni Association, and other university leaders met with donors, school administrators and alumni in and around the city on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 23-24.


You’re invited: Brand training 

Faculty and staff are invited to attend a brand training session offered by University Communications and Marketing to learn more about the new, compelling brand messaging platform about what makes the Saluki experience special. You can attend a session on Nov. 5 or 6, from 12:30-2 p.m. in Morris Library’s Guyon Auditorium.


Hundreds of students coming to SIU for Education Day on Oct. 29 

SIU Carbondale will host more than 300 high school students who plan to study education for a day filled with interactive activities and sessions during the Education Day celebration on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Student Center. 


Reminder: Mandatory annual Ethics Act training is due Thursday 

Mandatory 2024 annual Ethics Act training for all SIU Carbondale faculty, staff, graduate assistants, undergraduate assistants, volunteers, student workers and extra help workers is due Thursday, Oct. 31.


Architecture, interior design students prepare to ‘mask up’

More than 60 architecture and interior design students in Peter Smith’s design communication classes will show their creativity and cultural influences as they transform a white plastic mask into a work of art later this week.


SIU engineering students build catapult using pumpkins as projectiles

Engineering students today (Oct. 28) are testing and demonstrating a medieval weapon of siege warfare, but as may be appropriate for the season, the trebuchet is flinging pumpkins instead of rocks or flaming projectiles.


Reminder: Mandatory annual Title IX training is underway 

SIU Carbondale employees should check their inboxes for an email on Oct. 15 from Vector Solutions with information about mandatory training on new Title IX regulations. All employees must complete the training before Dec. 13, 2024. Start training for “Preventing Harassment and Discrimination Supervisors + Clery Act and Title IX.” The link to the training is also available on the Office of Equity and Compliance website


Reminder: Conversation of Understanding on civil rights is Wednesday

A Conversation of Understanding on Wednesday, Oct. 30, will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act and Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and look to the future. “Delivering on Promises: The Legacy of the Civil Rights Act and Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, and the 2024 Presidential Election” will be a hybrid event — available both as a live virtual discussion and in person at SIU Edwardsville.
