SIU earns $77.8M in external awards in 2023-24 

Funding from outside sources remained strong at SIU Carbondale during the last fiscal year, according to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. For the fiscal year ending June 30, research, training, service and other grants and contracts received and processed totaled $77.8 million. Faculty on the Carbondale campus received $61.6 million, while faculty in the School of Medicine in Springfield received $16.2 million.


Flying Salukis host regional intercollegiate championships this week

The School of Aviation’s Flying Salukis will be looking to win a 13th straight regional title beginning Wednesday, Oct. 23, when the team hosts the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s Region VIII competition.


Academic Affairs Strategic Plan is available

Using the lens of student success as its first principle, SIU Carbondale’s Office of Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs is presenting the university’s Academic Affairs strategic plan Saluki Student Success from Start to Finish: An Academic Affairs Focus. Utilizing collaboration and partnership throughout the SIU Carbondale campus and across the SIU System, the plan, which is part of Imagine 2030, provides objectives and strategies for student success, along with faculty and staff success.


Reminder: Flu immunizations available on campus Wednesday

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services will provide free flu immunizations for all active and retired SIU Carbondale employees, their dependents and surviving spouses enrolled in a state-sponsored health plan. The Jackson County Health Department will administer the immunizations at a walk-up flu shot clinic, set for 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the Student Center’s Renaissance Room. The SIU chapter of the State University Annuitants Association will have an informational table in the Renaissance Room during the clinic to answer questions about SIU employees’ pensions for current employees and retirees and on how to join SUAA.


SIU talk to focus on sun’s role on Earth’s climate

The sun’s impact on Earth’s climate is the topic of the next talk in the free “Journey to the Sun” series at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. Justin Schoof, founding director of the School of Earth Systems and Sustainability and a professor in the geography and environmental resources program, will present “The Sun’s Role in the Earth’s Climate.”


Shryock Auditorium hosts Halloween Extravaganza of music on Oct. 27 

The works of composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Andrew Lloyd Webber will be among the highlights when organists fill SIU Carbondale’s Shryock Auditorium on Sunday, Oct. 27, with a Halloween Extravaganza of music.


Update on transition to Slate from EAB Navigate

Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management are continuing the process of transitioning to Slate from EAB Navigate by May 2025 in order to streamline student communications. Read an update from the EAB Navigate to Slate Transition Team, which includes a detailed timeline and milestones.


Reminder: Roundtable talk to examine support for first year students is Tuesday 

Faculty, staff and graduate assistants are invited to attend the second of three first-year experience roundtable discussions this semester about supporting students in their first year at SIU Carbondale. The session is Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center’s Vermillion Room. Registration is not required, and participants may come and go as their schedules allow. 


Leadership training workshops for staff set for Nov. 12-15

Seats are available for free leadership training workshops being offered in November by the Staff Advisory Committee for the SIU System.


Photojournalist Tamara Abdul Hadi to present lecture on Thursday

Photojournalist and educator Tamara Abdul Hadi, whose work focuses on the historic and contemporary representation of her Iraqi culture in its diversity, will give an artist talk at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 in the Communications Building Room 1116.


Bridging the gap for SIU students

Chad Pendleton, a 1997 SIU Carbondale graduate who recently established the Pendleton Family Bridging the Gap Fund, will be among the Salukis attending the Chancellor’s Reception at this week’s Saluki Takeover Tour Memphis.


SIU’s Export Controls newsletter is available 

The monthly SIU Export Controls newsletter for October 2024 is available. The newsletter provides a resource for current export control issues and events that could affect SIU and its faculty. This edition includes guidance on the university’s interactions with Iran.
