SIU, Able Flight strengthen long-term ties with formal donation of planes, funds

The partnership between the School of Aviation and Able Flight, an aviation nonprofit for people with physical disabilities to receive intensive flight training, continues to grow. The organization is formally transferring ownership of two Vashon Ranger Light Sport airplanes to the university, along with donating funds for program expenses at SIU for several years.


Reminder on prohibited political activities

The SIU Ethics Office reminds all SIU Carbondale employees and appointees about the importance of individuals complying with the State Officials and Employees Ethics Act, especially on the topic of political activity.


Morton-Kenney Lecture hosts MacArthur Foundation president, philanthropy leader

John Palfrey, president of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and a national leader in philanthropy, will present the fall 2024 Morton-Kenney Public Affairs Lecture at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Varsity Theater in Carbondale.


United-SIU Aviation Career Day helps students chart flight paths for their future

More than 130 Chicago-area high school students will be introduced to SIU’s nationally recognized aviation program when United Airlines brings them to Southern Illinois Airport near Murphysboro on Saturday, Oct. 19, for the United-SIU Aviation Career Day.


Reminder: Mandatory annual Title IX training is underway 

SIU Carbondale employees should check their inboxes for an email on Oct. 15 from Vector Solutions with information about mandatory training on new Title IX regulations. All employees must complete the training before Dec. 13, 2024. Start training for “Preventing Harassment and Discrimination Supervisors + Clery Act and Title IX.” The link to the training is also available on the Office of Equity and Compliance website


SIU breaks ground on Tedrick Center, dedicates Mike Hanes Tower

Last Friday, Oct. 11, was a remarkable day as SIU Carbondale and the SIU Foundation held two special events, both of which drew large, enthusiastic audiences. Workshop on helping students in need transition to college is Oct. 28  

Student Health Services’ Higher Education Resources and Opportunities for Salukis in Need (HEROES) is hosting a free program for SIU Carbondale faculty and staff on Oct. 28. “Bridging Healthy Transitions to College” is from 9-11:30 a.m. in the Student Center’s Old Main Room. The program is also open to local school and community counselors and will provide information on how to support students experiencing homelessness and students in care as they transition to SIU. Mandatory training for P-card holders, reviewers and approvers

Anyone who holds a procurement card (P-card), or reviews or approves P-card purchases, must attend a mandatory training session offered by Procurement Services to continue using the P-card under their name or within their department.


Halloween celebrations at SIU, Carbondale 

Halloween festivities return to campus and the city of Carbondale from Friday, Oct. 18, through Nov. 9, with a variety of free, family friendly, fun events. SIU-related events include Haunted Hollow at Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center on Sunday, Oct. 20; the film “Friday the 13th” on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Becker Pavilion, and “The Great Southern Illinois Pumpkin Smash” at the SIU Farms Service Center on Nov. 9.


SIU Homecoming 2024 winners announced 

Mother Nature provided a beautiful week to celebrate Homecoming 2024 – “Salukis on the Frontier” style. Several community groups, alumni, current students, faculty and staff won honors, including Human Resources with first place in the Campus Door Decorating Contest.


Take a shot at designing Illinois’ new state flag 

The state of Illinois is accepting design entries from the public for possibly replacing the state’s 55-year-old flag. Faculty, staff and students are welcome to come by Morris Library’s information desk to make their own flag with craft supplies for submission to the Illinois Flag Commission. The entry deadline is Friday, Oct. 18. The commission will select 10 designs and host a six-week public voting that starts Jan. 1.


Stay warm watching Saluki sports 

The weather is getting a bit crisp, but put on a maroon hoodie and support Saluki athletics. The women’s soccer team hosts Missouri State at 6 p.m. today, Oct. 17, and Drake at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, both at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex. The Saluki baseball team hosts Eastern Illinois at noon Saturday, Oct. 19, at Itchy Jones Stadium. Be sure to check team schedules at siusalukis.com


SIU to host STEM careers conference for grades 5-9

The annual Expanding Your Horizons conference is Nov. 2 for girls and boys in grades 5-9 to explore careers in science and mathematics. Registration closes at midnight Oct. 29.
