SIU celebrating ‘Salukis on the Frontier’ Homecoming 2024

Salukis from far and wide will converge on campus Oct. 7-12 for Homecoming 2024, and the celebration includes a kickoff event, a big block party, a concert featuring country phenom Hunter Hayes and many other activities, including the big parade, football game and tailgating.


300 students expected at SIU’s 2024 FFA Career Day

Nearly 300 students from 22 Southern Illinois school districts will visit University Farms on Friday, Oct. 4, for FFA Career Day. Organizers aim to expose students to the diverse field of agriculture careers.


School of Theater and Dance 2024-25 season offers variety

The McLeod Theater stage will showcase the theatrical and musical talents of students while offering a wide spectrum of entertainment and emotion during the School of Theater and Dance’s 2024-2025 season. The season begins with “The Lightning Thief — The Percy Jackson Musical” Oct. 10-13.


University honors course proposal deadline is Nov. 6

The University Honors Program is accepting course proposals from faculty for fall 2025 and spring 2026 UHON seminars. Courses may be proposed in the faculty’s area of choice. The deadline to submit proposals is Nov. 6, with selections announced by Dec. 9.


‘Before the West Coast’ sports civil rights film screening is Tuesday

A free screening of the documentary “Before the West Coast: A Sports Civil Rights Story,” by SIU Carbondale alumnus Oyd Craddock, is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. A Q&A will follow the film. Registration for the film and reception is preferred but not required. The event is sponsored by the SIU Foundation in collaboration with the College of Arts and Media, SIU Department of Athletics and the Vice Chancellor for Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.


SIU rehabilitation alumnus, groundbreaker to be honored Oct. 10

A special public event at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at Morris Library will recognize the late SIU Carbondale alumnus Michael Nelipovich, the first person to earn a doctorate in rehabilitation despite being legally blind who went on to become a leading researcher and university professor and expert in the field.


Great Glass Pumpkin Patch sale is Oct. 12

The talents of students in SIU Carbondale’s glass program will be on display with the annual Great Glass Pumpkin Patch on Saturday, Oct. 12. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on the lawn in front of the breezeway between Pulliam Hall and the Wham Education Building.


$10 faculty-staff tickets for Saluki football vs. Illinois State

The deadline for SIU Carbondale faculty and staff to buy $10 tickets to the Saturday, Oct. 5, home football game against in-state rival Illinois State is 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4.


Salukis in action this weekend

Another full slate of Saluki sports is set for this weekend. The football Salukis host Illinois State in a key Missouri Valley Conference battle at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in the Blackout Cancer game at Saluki Stadium. The women’s volleyball team hosts Bradley at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, and Illinois State at 3 p.m. Saturday, both in Davies Gym. The Saluki men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams host Missouri State in the “Dual in the Dale,” Friday and Saturday at the Student Recreation Center’s Shea Natatorium, and the women’s softball team hosts Jefferson College at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at Charlotte West Stadium.


Reminder: SIU Carbondale accepting honorary degree/service award nominations

The university is now accepting nominations for honorary degrees and distinguished service awards that will be presented at May 2025 commencement ceremonies. The nomination deadline is Oct. 16. Nominations are also open to the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.


Alumni Association offering chance at free Homecoming tailgate, game tickets

The SIU Alumni Association, in partnership with its presenting Homecoming sponsor, RollnUp Smoke Shop & Liquor, has coupons for a free bag of ice with the purchase of any 12-pack of alcohol, soft drink or water from any RollnUp location in Southern Illinois. Coupons are available in the reception area of the Guida-Moller Family Alumni Center in the C-wing of Woody Hall. Presenting the coupons at RollnUp also enters you into a drawing to receive free tickets to the association’s Homecoming tailgate and tickets to the SIU vs. North Dakota State on Oct. 12 at Saluki Stadium.
