‘Journey to the Sun’ series launches with talk on NASA’s solar probes
“Journey to the Sun,” a monthly series of talks focused on the sun and the major role it plays in the lives of humans kicks off Friday, Sept. 27, at Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium with a presentation on NASA’s solar spacecraft fleet.

Two special families were the 2024 Saluki Family of the Year winners at SIU Carbondale and were honored during the Sept. 19-22 Saluki Family Weekend festivities.
SIU Carbondale inks agreement to improve access for John Wood Community College students
SIU Carbondale signed a Saluki Step Ahead agreement with John Wood Community College to provide quality students the option to earn their bachelor’s degrees remotely and at a lower cost in 12 academic programs. SIU has about 50 partnerships with community college campuses in Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas.
Southern Illinois Piano Festival features guest artists, lectures
SIU Carbondale’s Southern Illinois Piano Festival will once again provide magical moments as the biennial classical music festival brings works of renowned pianists to the region for lectures, workshops and solo recitals. This year’s festival and guest artist series features pianists Daniel Paul Horn on Oct. 1 and Angela Kim on March 24-25.
Jensik honored as SIU Inventor of the Year
Phil Jensik, an associate professor in SIU School of Medicine’s Department of Physiology, is the 2024 SIU System Inventor of the Year. His research explores mutations in genes that result in neurodevelopmental disorders such as intellectual disabilities, speech disorders and autism spectrum disorders, affecting about one in 10 U.S. children.
Reminder: Roundtable talk to examine support for first-year students is Wednesday
Faculty, staff and graduate assistants are invited to attend the first of three first-year experience roundtable discussions this semester about supporting students in their first year at SIU Carbondale. The session is Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center’s Faculty and Staff Lounge in the Old Main Room. Registration is not required, and participants may come and go as their schedules allow.
Virtual appointments available for faculty, staff regalia sale on Oct. 15
Events and Outreach is announcing a virtual faculty and staff regalia sale through Herff Jones, a national provider of custom regalia. Graduate students wishing to purchase regalia rather than rent are also welcome. The university’s Herff Jones representative will be available between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Oct. 15 via online appointment to assist faculty and staff in ordering regalia.
Reminder: Encourage grads to attend Grad Bash on Tuesday
Faculty and staff are encouraged to remind graduating seniors of Grad Bash on Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in University Bookstore in the Student Center. The event is for August and December 2024 graduates.
SIU’s Export Controls newsletter is available
The monthly SIU Export Controls newsletter for September 2024 is available. The newsletter provides a resource for current export control issues and events that could affect SIU and its faculty. This edition includes an overview of the SIU System Export Controls Office.
