SIU Day of Giving raises nearly $1.2 million
Thanks to more than 1,500 donors, the ninth annual SIU Day of Giving raised nearly $1.2 million on Sept. 18. With two Days of Giving in the 2024 calendar year, SIU alumni and friends have donated more than $4.3 million this year.
Student research team hopes to discuss research on space-age crops with professionals
Students led by Scott D. Hamilton-Brehm, associate professor in the School of Biological Sciences, have had five abstracts accepted for presentation at a conference highlighting the important role algae plays in capturing and utilizing carbon dioxide. SIU’s AlgaeUnlocked team is one of just 15 nationwide finalists for the U.S. Department of Energy’s AlgaePrize.
Flu immunizations will be available on campus Oct. 10, 23
The Illinois Department of Central Management Services will provide free flu immunizations for all active and retired SIU Carbondale employees, their dependents and surviving spouses enrolled in a state-sponsored health plan. The Jackson County Health Department will administer the immunizations at two walk-up flu shot clinics, set for 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 10 and Oct. 23 in the Student Center’s Renaissance Room.
Banned Books Week includes donation of 500+ books to Morris Library
A celebration of donated books to Morris Library’s Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) and a continuing focus on the harms of censorship will highlight Banned Books Week, which runs Sunday through Saturday, Sept. 22-28. The SCRC will host a free, public reception with refreshments at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, in the library’s Hall of Presidents and Chancellors to celebrate the addition of more than 500 books about diverse communities, donated by the Student Multicultural Resource Center.
SIU Alumni Association introduces digital magazine
The SIU Alumni Association has launched the first edition of the new SIU Alumni magazine. The reimagined magazine is an interactive, all-digital publication. The fall 2024 issue is available online now. This new digital version replaces the print magazine and will publish four times a year — in September, December, March and June.
SIU theater majors to showcase their talents at ‘New Faces’ on Saturday
The School of Theater and Dance will introduce audiences to this year’s new theater majors with the annual “New Faces” showcase on Saturday, Sept. 21. The free performances will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Communication Building’s Christian H. Moe Laboratory Theater, Room 1045.
Saluki football highlights Family Weekend on Saturday
There will be plenty of opportunities to wear maroon and support Saluki athletics over the next week starting with Family Weekend. The No. 7-ranked football Salukis host No. 21 Southeast Missouri State in the “War for the Wheel” at 6 p.m. at Saluki Stadium. The women’s volleyball team hosts the Saluki Invitational in Davies Gym, today-Saturday, Sept. 19-21, with matches against Missouri State at 4 p.m. today; SIU Edwardsville at 3 p.m. Friday and SEMO at 3 p.m. Saturday. The women’s soccer team hosts Illinois State at 6 p.m. today, Sept. 19, at the Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex. The Saluki women’s softball team hosts Three Rivers College with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, in Charlotte West Stadium. Be sure to check team schedules at siusalukis.com.
Reminder: Campus Appreciation Cookout is Oct. 2
Faculty, staff and students are invited to share in the university’s recent successes at a campus appreciation cookout from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, between the Student Services Building Pavilion and Faner Hall. The event will be held rain or shine in that location. Food will be served out of the pavilion with sno-cones and a DJ in the Faner mall area. No reservations are required; just stop by and enjoy the fun and celebrate our accomplishments.
SIU Alumni Association to honor 2024 distinguished alumni Friday
The SIU Alumni Association will honor six individuals and two groups at the organization’s 2024 SIU Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony at a banquet on Friday, Sept. 20, at Blue Sky Vineyard in Makanda.
