‘Singing with the Stars’ kicks off McLeod Summer Playhouse 50-season celebration
The 2024 edition of the iconic McLeod Summer Playhouse is celebrating 50 seasons of bringing performances from some of the region’s finest amateur singers and dancers this summer. “Singing with the Stars,” which serves as a fundraiser for three productions during the MSP season, returns to McLeod Theater at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 31.
SIU researchers study moral injuries of war, advocate for veterans
Justin McDaniel, associate professor of public health in the School of Human Sciences, and his team are studying the effects of moral injuries of war on veterans – for example, if an innocent civilian dies during a mission. He is also leading an effort to change policy and remove barriers to treatment.
Lot 56 will be closed Friday and Saturday
Lot 56 (the large parking lot south of Banterra Center and Saluki Stadium) will be closed Friday and Saturday, May 31-June 1, for the Jackson County Health Department’s household chemical collection event.
SIU launches study to attain equity in compensation
The university is launching a study of how pay for faculty and staff compares to that of other employers as part of its Imagine 2030 strategic plan. The goal is to craft new compensation policies and guidelines that will provide consistency in compensation and pay scales that align with the larger job market by fall 2025.
Paul Simon Institute awards four Simon Democracy Prizes
Separate projects by two SIU Carbondale students — VanKevia Garner and Lylee Gibbs — are among four proposals to win Paul Simon Democracy Prizes from the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. Each winner will receive $5,000 for the design and implementation of projects to revitalize democracy in their communities.
SIU prof named an Illinois Researcher to Know
Scott Hamilton-Brehm, an associate professor of microbiology, is one of just 31 researchers named to the 2024 List of Researchers to Know, a list is published annually by the Illinois Science & Technology Coalition.
SIU Press earns 2024 Illinois State Historical Society awards
Three titles from Southern Illinois University Press recently earned honors at the Illinois State Historical Society’s Best of Illinois History awards.
Carbondale Chamber to host June 8 fundraiser for SIU scholarships
The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce will host Glo Bingo on Saturday, June 8, at the Carbondale Civic Center, 200 S. Illinois Ave. Proceeds will raise funds for three Chamber of Commerce community scholarships to support local students who will attend SIU Carbondale.
Paul Simon Institute hosts discussion on the importance of international education
Fanta Aw, executive director and CEO of the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers, will discuss the importance of international education and international exchange programs during a virtual presentation with the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute on Wednesday, June 5.
Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter is available
The latest Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for May 2024 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.
Reminder: Decals-By-Mail program available through June 7
The Department of Public Safety Parking Division’s Decals-By-Mail program for eligible faculty and staff for the fiscal year 2025 is available through June 7. This is for those choosing payroll deduction. The salary ranges for decal categories have not been increased.
Reminder: Benefit Choice open enrollment deadline is Friday
The deadline for the State Employees Group Insurance Program Benefit Choice open enrollment for all eligible employees is Friday, May 31. Employees are encouraged to review the Benefits Choice Booklet for details on all changes, benefit enhancements and premium costs.
SIU’s Export Controls newsletter is available
The monthly SIU Export Controls newsletter for May 2024 is available. The newsletter provides a resource for current export control issues and events that could affect SIU and its faculty. This edition includes information on Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment Programs, a list of research equipment and items that require notice to the Export Controls office and the SIU Clean Laptop Program.
