John and Jayne Simmons make $10M gift to SIU’s law school

A $10 million gift from John and Jayne Simmons will impact generations of SIU Carbondale law students and strengthen the law school’s ability to serve its students and the region. In honor of their generosity, the law school will be named Simmons Law School, pending approval from the SIU Board of Trustees in April.


Center for Teaching Excellence workshops to focus on AI in higher ed

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education is the core of a weeklong series of workshops and focus groups hosted by the Center for Teaching Excellence, Feb. 12-16.


University inks Saluki Step Ahead pact with Joliet Junior College

SIU Carbondale strengthened its commitment to students in northern Illinois with the Feb. 1 signing of a Saluki Step Ahead program agreement with Joliet Junior College. SIU now has agreements with 42 of 48 community colleges in the state.


Network Empowering Women brown bag lunches set

The first of three SIU Network Empowering Women (NEW) brown bag lunches for the 2024 spring semester is set for Feb. 14 in the Faculty and Staff Lounge at Old Main in the Student Center. The free event is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and open to anyone interested in discussing issues affecting women on campus.


SIU Law to host virtual lecture on using AI in the legal profession

A virtual lecture on Wednesday, Feb. 7, hosted by the SIU School of Law will focus on how artificial intelligence, or AI, can be used in the legal profession. John Tredennick, founder and CEO of Merlin Search Technologies, will present “Using Generative AI to Revolutionize Investigations and Discovery Workflow.” The free lecture is from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and available both at the Lesar Law Building, Room 102, or via Zoom.

The Department of Public Safety’s February 2024 issue of the “Saluki Watch Dawg” is available. This month’s edition includes tips on personal safety, including an overview of stalking; details on the Feb. 24 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge at Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center to benefit Special Olympics Illinois; an introduction of DPS’ command staff, and important semester dates.


Reminder: Distinguished student service award nominations due March 18

Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate a deserving student for an SIU Student Distinguished Service Award by the SIU Board of Trustees. The award recognizes and honors the efforts and contributions of students in the SIU System “whose acts of service are demonstrative of excellence and exemplary commitment to the support, advancement and achievement of fellow students, their campus, and their community.” The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. March 18.
