SIU gets $2.6M grant to use celestial marvels as inspiration to study the sun
Researchers at SIU are playing a key role to inspire curiosity about the sun with the help of a $2.6 million grant for the three-year SolarSTEAM project, which runs through June 2026.
Nominations open for Sturgis Public Service Award
Nominations for the Lindell W. Sturgis Memorial Public Service Award, which honors an SIU Carbondale employee for their community work away from campus, are being accepted. Nominations must be received by Feb. 21.
Submit nominations now for Diversity Champion Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the Diversity Champion Awards, presented annually to members of the SIU community who exemplify anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion through community engagement, programming, creation of best practices and initiatives, implementation of policies and procedures, training and mentoring. All nominations must be submitted online by Feb. 29.

Julie Richmond, administrative assistant, University Communications and Marketing, is showing her Saluki pride. Banterra Center will be busy over the next week. The women’s basketball team hosts Indiana State at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, and Evansville at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21. The Saluki men’s basketball team hosts Valparaiso at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24. The Department of Public Safety’s January 2024 issue of the “Saluki Watch Dawg” is available. This month’s edition includes details for crime or incident reporting, the S.A.F.E. (Safety, Awareness, Facts and Education) website; DPS employee awards and new hires, and tips for students as they return to class.
Saluki women’s basketball hosts Family Night on Friday
The Friday, Jan. 19, women’s basketball game against Indiana State will be Family Night. The game starts at 6 p.m. at Banterra Center. Fans can purchase $3 tickets when buying at least four tickets to the game. Tickets can also be purchased by going to siusalukis.com/promo and entering the word FAMILY. To use the promo code, customers must buy at least four tickets.
Farming Alliance Conference is Jan. 27
The 2024 Food Works’ Southern Illinois Farming Alliance Conference will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 27 at John A. Logan College in Carterville. Trent Ford, Illinois state climatologist and a former assistant professor in SIU Carbondale’s Department of Geography and Environmental Resources, is the keynote speaker.
