Doctoral student researches fungus that sickens hibernating snakes

Working with Robin Warne, associate professor in the School of Biological Sciences, doctoral student Adrian Macedo is researching a fungus that sickens hibernating snakes. Macedo began collecting data this fall during the migration. He hopes to complete the study in two years and is aiming for a career as a research professor.


MFA playwrighting student from Metro East earns prestigious fellowship

Emily Klingensmith, a second-year MFA playwriting student, will have her full-length play performed in April 2023 as part of the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival’s Confluence Writers Project. “Titania and Oberon’s Road Trip,” conceptualized from Shakespeare’s comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is also scheduled for public reading in the School of Theater and Dance’s Big Muddy New Play Festival March 23-26. She is a student of Jacob Juntunen, an associate professor in dramatic theory, criticism and playwriting.


University continues to monitor COVID, flu and other concerns  

During winter break, the university will continue to monitor the situation with COVID, influenza and other viruses. At this time, we anticipate starting the spring semester on Jan. 17 with in-person classes as planned. However, COVID and other viruses have been unpredictable in the past. If we need to adjust our plans, we will inform the campus community through email and post updates to the Virus Information website.


4,000+ grade school students attend Field Trip Day women’s basketball game 

More than 4,000 students from area elementary schools cheered on the women’s basketball Salukis to their 100-72 victory over Tennessee State during the 2022 Field Trip Day game on Wednesday. Events such as Field Trip Day engage students with SIU early, fitting with the Student Success and Engagement pillar of Imagine 2030.  


Coffee and Cookies With the Chancellor is today 

Faculty and staff are reminded of the Coffee and Cookies With the Chancellor from 1 to 3 p.m. today, Dec. 8, in Anthony Hall.


Saluki Pride: Ryan Redner studies human behavior, teaches students how to help people with disabilities  

Ryan Redner is fascinated by people and what they do, and he’s devoted his life to studying human behavior and teaching students to help others. Redner is an associate professor and the program director for the on-campus behavior analysis and therapy program. It encompasses the master’s program that is one of just 22 programs in the world accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International.


Paul Simon Institute to host leading expert on democracy  

Rachel Kleinfeld, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and one of the nation’s leading experts on democracy, will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute for a virtual discussion on Monday, Dec. 12.


SIU emerita professor to receive human rights award

Jane Swanson, a professor emerita in counseling psychology, will receive the 2022 Human Rights Day Award from the Southern Illinois chapter of the United Nations Association during a ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 10.


View this month’s ‘Saluki Watch Dawg’

The Department of Public Safety’s December 2022 issue of the “Saluki Watch Dawg” is available. This month’s edition includes details for online safety, available crime reporting options, the SAFE website, winter driving tips, winter break residence hall closing information, along with the Saluki Food Pantry and Higher Education Resources and Opportunities (HEROES) programs.


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday 

Members of the New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, along with guests will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11.
