L.E.A.D. nominations being accepted 

Nominations are underway for the university’s second cohort of the L.E.A.D. SIU Carbondale initiative. L.E.A.D. stands for Leading, Empowering, Advocating and Developing talent for the university. The initiative identifies, engages and mentors a select group of faculty and staff interested in learning more about higher education leadership and the complexities of operating a public university in today’s world.


SIU Carbondale to investigate heating, cooling projects aimed at improving sustainability 

SIU Carbondale officials will investigate the feasibility of three projects that could improve sustainability and better heat and cool campus buildings, following today’s (Dec. 1) vote by the SIU Board of Trustees.  


Five to receive honorary degrees, Distinguished Service Awards 

Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, a human rights organization based in Montgomery, Alabama, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree following approval by the SIU Board of Trustees today (Dec. 1). Stevenson is one of five individuals recommended by SIU Carbondale Chancellor Austin A. Lane for honorary degrees and Distinguished Service Awards.


Update on provost search

Prior to Thanksgiving break, the university hosted four finalists for on-campus interviews for the next provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. After considering all the feedback received from those who participated in the interviews, Chancellor Austin A. Lane has determined that the university needs to continue the search. As such, consulting firm Witt/Kieffer will present additional names to the search committee for consideration. The search committee will continue its work with Witt/Kieffer. The goal is to have the process complete by February.


Law school’s Elder Law Clinic wins Governor’s Engaging Aging Award

The SIU School of Law’s legal clinic for older adults on Nov. 29 received a 2022 Governor’s Engaging Aging Award from the Illinois Department on Aging. The annual award goes to community organizations that have “gone above and beyond” to make a positive impact in the lives of older adults over the past year. The elder law clinic provides free legal services to persons aged 60 and older who live in Illinois’ 13 southernmost counties.


‘Little Women’ takes to SIU’s McLeod Theater stage Dec. 8-11

Singing, dancing and merriment will burst onto the McLeod Theater stage in early December as the School of Theater and Dance presents “Little Women, the Broadway Musical,” Dec. 8-11.


Slots available this month for Chancellor’s Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main

As the semester winds down, this month's schedule of the Chancellor’s Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main has a “Let's Talk Tech” session hosted by the Office of Information Technology from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2. The session is an opportunity for faculty and staff to help OIT in planning for 2023 and offer suggestions. Several other openings are available through Friday, Dec. 23. Anyone interested in reserving the faculty-staff lounge for an event, or who would like to serve as a host, can email events@siu.edu.


‘Let’s Talk Research’ monthly discussion is Dec. 9 

The third “Let’s Talk Research,” a monthly virtual event that highlights research on campus, is set for Friday, Dec. 9.


Coats for Kids program returns in December 

Starting at tonight’s women’s basketball game against Chicago State at Banterra Center, Saluki Athletics and the Carbondale Police Department are partnering again this holiday season with their annual Coats for Kids coat drive.


Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter is available

The monthly Illinois Ethics Matters newsletter for November 2022 is available. The Office of Executive Inspector General publishes the newsletter to allow state employees to stay informed of current issues relating to ethics. The SIU System Ethics Office website is siusystem.edu/ethics.
