Open forums for provost candidates 

Four candidates for provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will meet with faculty, staff and students during a series of open forums on campus, beginning Monday, Nov. 14. The four finalists were invited to campus for in-person interviews after a nationwide search that included a 27-member search committee comprising faculty, staff, students and a community representative.


Conversation on free speech, diversity of thought is Wednesday 

A “Conversation of Understanding” next week will look at the 2022 Viewfinder Campus Climate survey that recommended educating students on free speech and fostering an environment where they are taught “how to think well, not what to think.” Faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members are invited to join the live virtual discussion at noon Wednesday, Nov. 16. As the holidays approach and you begin preparing for festive meals, your wallet may notice a pinch, but Niki Davis, Hospitality, Tourism and Event Management Program manager and professor of practice, offers tips for holiday meals on tight budgets.

SIU Veterans Day commemoration is Friday 

The university will publicly commemorate Veterans Day with the annual vigil at the flagpole near the center of campus. Faculty, staff and students are reminded that the university will be closed on Veterans Day.


Nov. 15 panel discussion about franchising, inclusive entrepreneurship  

Faculty, staff and students are invited to a virtual event that delves into the world of franchising and explains how this business model is embracing inclusive entrepreneurship. “Franchising and Inclusive Entrepreneurship” is set for 5:30-6:45 p.m. Nov. 15 via Zoom.


SIU freshman wins free tuition after 2,000 students attend the men’s basketball home opener 

Annabel Carr, a freshman from Edwardsville, Illinois, has won free tuition for the spring semester. She was chosen at random Nov. 7 when 2,000+ SIU students attended the first home men’s basketball game.


Southern Illinois Dance Company performance highlights ‘Harvest’ 

SIU Carbondale students will be among those to showcase their artistic talents when the Southern Illinois Dance Company presents “Harvest” in SIU’s Student Center Ballrooms on Saturday, Nov. 12.


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday 

New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.
