SIU welcomes students to back to campus

The university rolls out the maroon carpet to welcome new and returning students to campus in grand Saluki style with a host of special activities during Saluki Startup and Weeks of Welcome.


Saluki BioBlitz enlists citizen-scientists to survey wildlife on campus

SIU Carbondale and the surrounding community are about to find out more about their wildlife “neighbors” as a researcher prepares a second public survey of the flora and fauna populating campus. The 24-hour Saluki BioBlitz is set for Aug. 26.


Saluki Pride: Library Affairs IT manager Richard Beach focuses on customer service

As information technology manager for Library Affairs, Richard Beach said one of the most rewarding aspects of his job is working with students to expose them to new technology. Beach received the unit’s 2022 Outstanding Staff Award and “keeps the building running” by going “above and beyond his duties,” according to Susan Tulis, library affairs associate professor. Chancellor’s Faculty-Staff Lounge available for meetings

University departments can use the Chancellor’s Faculty-Staff Lounge at Old Main to showcase their efforts to the campus community.


MVCC, SIU sign Saluki Step Ahead agreement

The university strengthened its commitment to students with an agreement on Aug. 10 to provide an SIU education to qualified place-bound students who attend Moraine Valley Community College through Saluki Step Ahead. The agreement brings a total of 22 Saluki Step Ahead pacts the university has with community colleges in Illinois, Missouri and Texas.


Former Australian foreign minister to present at SIU’s Paul Simon Institute

Gareth Evans, former foreign minister of Australia and president emeritus of the International Crisis Group, will join the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute for a virtual conversation at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15.


New AD, 4 coaches to give updates on Saluki sports

Four Saluki coaches and new athletic director Tim Leonard will provide updates on SIU Carbondale sports next week as the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce hosts a luncheon at Banterra Center, starting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16.


Barbara Flynn Currie is 2022 Simon-Edgar Award recipient

Former Illinois House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie was selected as the 2022 Simon-Edgar Statesmanship Award recipient. The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute and former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar partnered in November 2020 to launch the award, which is named for the late U.S. Sen. Paul Simon, a Democrat, and Edgar, a Republican. Currie’s 40-year career in the General Assembly remains the longest of any woman in the history of Illinois.


New Arts Jazztet will perform Sunday 

New Arts Jazztet, a Southern Illinois jazz group comprising SIU faculty, along with special guests, will perform at Jazz Vespers, an evening prayer service at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1501 W. Chautauqua St., Carbondale, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14.
