Saluki Pride: Christina Rowell transforms data into understandable reports

For a moment, imagine the sheer amount of data an institution with thousands of students, staff and faculty must generate and deal with. Christina Rowell, a member of SIU’s Institutional Research and Studies team, helps make sense of it all. Saluki Safety session on COVID-19 safety measures is Aug. 2

A virtual panel presentation updating the university community on COVID-19 safety measures and the fall semester will take place from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Aug. 2. The Saluki Safety update will be hosted by Chancellor Austin A. Lane and include information on safety protocols, initiatives to encourage vaccinations and other topics. Panelists will respond to questions submitted by viewers. The presentation will be shown live at chancellor.siu.edu and the chancellor's YouTube channel, where it will also be posted for later viewing. 


SIU launches vaccination incentive program for students

As part of its commitment to encourage vaccinations, SIU Carbondale is launching Protect the Pack, providing incentives to students who become vaccinated. For more information, visit the university’s COVID-19 information website. Anyone who wants to get vaccinated before classes start next month should visit vaccines.gov.


Send-off for Saluki Olympian DeAnna Price is Friday 

Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to show their support for Saluki alumna and USA Olympian hammer thrower and Carbondale resident DeAnna Price by gathering in the Banterra Center parking lot at 6:45 p.m. Friday as she leaves her last practice before the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Those attending the casual drive-through send-off are encouraged to bring signs and/or stay in their vehicles and make some noise.


 Portions of Douglas Drive closed for road repairs 

Motorists on campus are reminded that Douglas Drive – from Lincoln Drive to Saluki Drive – between the Engineering Building and Banterra Center, is closed for road repairs. Parking lot 52, southwest of Banterra Center, is closed, and lot 37, south of the Engineering Building, is accessible only from the south entrance. Depending on the weather, the project is expected to take two weeks. Contact the Parking Division at 618-453-5369 with any questions.


Students receive 2021 SIU System Distinguished Service Awards

Four students from SIU Carbondale, including one each with the School of Law and School of Medicine, received the inaugural 2021 SIU System Distinguished Service Award at the SIU Board of Trustees meeting on July 15.


SIU’s in-person open house is Friday

Faculty and staff are reminded of SIU’s in-person open house on Friday, July 23. Based at the Banterra Center, the event is for students who will be new to SIU in fall 2022 or after and include tours, academic showcases, games and more. In addition, food trucks will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Lot 18, south of Banterra Center, not only for open house guests, but also faculty, staff and current students.


Saluki Summer Bridge program helps new students transition to college successfully

Through July 30, a group of 26 future Salukis are participating in the Saluki Summer Bridge program, a unique, free two-week program that gives first-year students a head start toward college success as they participate in enrichment courses and leadership activities, check out the learning platforms used on campus and get acquainted with all SIU has to offer.


Campus units, businesses can sign up for job fair 

Businesses and units on campus can sign up now to participate in the university’s Saluki Student Job Fair, which is from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 18 in Student Center Ballroom D. Organizers encourage businesses and departments on campus to register by Aug. 6.
