Morris Library honors Carus family with new endowment

Morris Library will honor a benevolent family by establishing the new Alwin C. Carus Endowment. The library’s leadership recently worked with the SIU Foundation to transfer $1 million from the Carus Mineral Trust to create the endowment. It will support archival work and a future endowed chair, the Alwin C. Carus Archivist and Professor of Philosophy, all fully funded by the revenue from the trust.


SIU professor researches how to perfect pumpkins

On a greenhouse shelf near Alan Walters’ vegetable laboratory sits a pile of pumpkins that exhibit a variety of orange hues, textures and sizes that have been cataloged, not carved or made into pies. Walters, a professor of vegetable science and breeding, will tell you these days pumpkins are a lot more than a doorstep ornament to celebrate Halloween.


State-required training related to harassment, discrimination is due Nov. 25 

All faculty and staff are reminded of the Nov. 25 deadline to complete state-required training relating to harassment and discrimination. Employees received an Oct. 21 email on this training, which is required at least annually and is in addition to the federally required Preventing Discrimination and Sexual Violence training program.


Reminder: Prepare for inclement weather

Faculty and staff should take two important steps to prepare for inclement weather: review the campus policy and ensure that the university has your current cellphone number if you want to receive emergency text alerts.


SIU Today holiday schedule

SIU Today is taking a holiday on Thursday, Nov. 26, in observance of Thanksgiving. SIU Today will return Nov. 30. The last issue before winter break will be Dec. 10. SIU Today will resume in January.
